So I've just got myself a copy of CK complete through Ebay, and it came with no manuel. So i looked through the game and there was no tutorial . So I'm kinda stuck I'm not sure how to play this game. Should I begin war mongering from the get go, and if so how do I?
Who should I play as first someone big like England or some tiny little nation state (nubia?)?
What do all those title mean?

I quess what I'm really looking for is a good tutorial. When I was learning to play HoI 2, I spent about half my time skiming the wiki and the other half reading the execellent : "How the Hell do you play this game", which is a tutorial AAR, unfortunalty the link for which I cannot find:mad:.

Is there any kind of tutorial/aar type thing for this game?
Any advice for a new player?

Cheers in advance,
Mat

You can also check this AAR that never really finished ... but he did manage to describe some of the icons and screen etc.

Try reading the above and the Bohemia AAR first ... they should help you get started in the game. Then just try things out ... and feel free to ask specific questions here :)

Don't worry about the lack of manual ... the one that shipped with the game was of ...hmm ... questionable quality anyways ... and have since been made obsolete by 5 CK patches an expansion and a DV beta-patch

Suggestion.... Just ignore 1.5 and download Deus Vult expansion. It is night and day.

Yes it will cost more money but I'd never play 1.5 again.

Hi,

Thanks for all your advise. I started a game as the Dutchy of Bohemia and I am now a Kindom and in-directly control about 11 provinces and have another 8 or so vasseled. I don't think I'm doing too bad.

However there are a few things I was wondering about:

1. With my first King I had about 400 prestige when I declared war against the king of Poland.

But when I forced peace with him, by demanding everything I could, my prestige droped to -1800, or something close to that. Is this because I forced him to sign an unfair deal, or did it have something to do with him pliaging 4 of my provinces?

I can't guarantee that it only droped after making peace. It might have crashed sometime before that but I only noticed it when I stopped my war.

2. How do I deal with bad reputations?

I assumed that war with pegans were "free wars" so I rapidly expanded into the Baltic. But my reputation seems to have taken a nose dive.

I thought perhaps a long period of peace and rebuilding, with my new king, was in order but dispite 15 years without war, my courtiers are still leaving and my reputation is still "rather bad".

The only decent court memebers which stay with my are my pegan ones, and the pope keeps demanding I kill them! Which brings me on to my final question.

3. When do Crusades end?

My current Ruler seems to have a very "iffy" reputation with the Clergy. At first he was condemed as a "heritic", then he was forgiven (at great personal cost) and then the Pope forced him to go on crusade now he's heralded as a "Zealous" "Crusader" with 1.4k peity.

Which all though begin very nice has completely broken my ecconomy.

The kingdom's treasury is very much in the red, -3000 or there about. However despite that I managed to wressel Jerusalem from Eygpt.

I then held it for 4 months and still the "End of the Crusade" event didn't trigger. So I then made peace with Eygpt on condition that I was installed as the legal owner of Jerusalem and another four mounths later the Crusade still hasn't finsihed.

I've Disbanded my regiments as I'm far too broke and that portion of the Middle East is at "peace". Meanwhile my courtiers are all either: disserting, getting ill* or getting killed/exiled for being Pegans. Meanwhile I'm constantly having to raise armies to put down pegan rebels or traitous Counts/Dukes.

* Apparently my court has an Intestinal Worm that is spreading through the court and killing them. :(

How the do I get the Pope to recognise the Crusade is over, and what Kind of reward should I hope to get from it?

Is crusading ever worth it?

1. Unfair peace deal :) ... seems you forced all your claims before you had the war score to back it up. Usually the Ai will refuse such deals, unless he has lost all his land. If f.x. you took one of his provinces, and Germany took the others (because they were also at war with Poland), then you would only have warscore for one province, but as Poland lost all thirs, you can force any peace on him you wish. But by taking all your claims, you are grabbing more than you "earned".

Check peace score before signing peace :) ... if it is negative, you will lose prestige. If it is positive, you'll gain prestige.

2. Don't expand too much at the time ... even expanding into pagan lands will give you BadBoy points. To get rid of them, grant titles and keep a high piety. Check here for BB rules: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=162777

3. Crusades end by event. So it can be anything from 2 days to 6 years (and probably longer). To end it sooner, make sure the provinces around the target are in christian hands too (doesn't have to be yours). The reward will be massive piety and prestige if I remember right.

He can't actually force you to do any active crusading .... you can just stay at home, or do your own crusading in pagan lands, if the crusade expectations are killing your piety.

CK is unlike most war games in that it's not really a war game, but more of a dynasty building game. So playing with patience and waiting for favourable opportunities is something I recommend. I've also had one ruler use some of prestige to grab claims slowly over time, so that his future heirs will be able to wage war in the decades to come.

Expanding too soon too fast has many repurcussions. I learned this the hard way when vassals rebelled, kingdoms declared war, and my ruler was excommunicated all within a year, LOL.

Most likely the -1800 prestige will have your "loyal" subjects running away ... both courtiers and vassals.

Open the character page for one of the vassals/courtiers and hover the pointer over his loyalty rating. There you can see what effects his loyalty at the moment. This will give you an idea of what they do or don't like about you.

You expanded too quickly, and were too harsh to Poland. But apparently you'll survive.

Her's what you do: ride out the storm. No more claims, no more wars. Be a happy little King of Bohemia until your current King dies. Eventually you'll get an Estates General event and pay off most of your debt. If that doesn't happen quickly enough you can force your vassals to give you many presents. Marry some random chick if you're single,or marry your eldest daughter off to some guy.

Your heir will start with no prestige, no piety, and his vassals will be unhappy. But his reputation will improve significantly (33% reduction in BB).

It was my old King who got the -1800 prestige thankfully that happend when he was 70 and he died within a few months. My New King (Bavor) is the one of on crusade.

Bavor was the favorite son who I gave a number of titles to so when he started his reign my prestige was about 500 (He was Duke of Danziq and Duke of Bohemia and held another couple of titles).

Below is a screenie of my Kingdom.

So I'm earning about 99 gold peices a months so thats 2.5 years before I 'm in the black. I've given up another couple of my titles including "Duke of Bohemia". I'm currently controlling 1 more province than I should that being Jerusalem. Should I install a vassal there or hold it for myself and install a vassal somewhere else?

Its just Jerusalem is a very valuble province, and by holding it myself I get a decent income and I can raise a regiment there without irriating any of my lords. But then again Jerusalem is surrounded by alot of very angry Turks (thankfully their not at war with me).

I don't want to hand out too many titles because then it take alot longer to get any money.

So is the best strategy just to sit arround and wait. Perhaps when I've got some more money spending it on infrastructure until my Bad boy drops to at least honourable?

I've looked over most (95%) of my courtiers loyalty and generally its increasing by 4.4% (I think mostly because I've enacted feudal contract). But I'm still getting lost of My talents aren't appreacted and Public challenge Steward/marshal/whatever events. These usually end with said coutrier leaving.

Even when I appoint the the moaning courtier to a position they still leave court within a month. That being said I think for the most part my court is becoming more stable.

My three main probelms are the 1)Pope killing off all my good courtiers (with 15< stats) because their pegan. 2) An intestinal worm which has so far claimed 10 courtier, ie they died, and infected about that number again 3) My vassal rebelling, which they do at a very high frequency.

Anything I can do about this?

If a Vassal rebels can I take their titles away? or is that more bad boy points. Because I swear if the Count of Stettin rebels once more I'm going to kill him! (Seriously in the last 3 years he has rebelled 7 times! and apparenty he is gaining 0.3 loyalty a month.)

Cheers in advance,

Mat

Rebelling vassals can be a godsend when your reputation is bad :) .... just beat him up, force-vassalize him again and renounce claim on his title. This will bag you -1 BB point per province. Force-vassalizing is 0 BB and giving up the claim in -1 BB. It is a bit gamey, but a quick way to get a good reputation again. Which might help you getting fewer rebellions.

Best way to keep your pagans alive is to NOT have a diocese bishop appointed, and to change your religious law. That should cut down on the "kill the pagans events".

What traits do the count of Stettin have?? ... if he is Rebellious, he will get events that lower his loyalty and giving him events where he can start a civil war or declare independence.

As long as your Reputation is bad, keep him around (see above). Once your reputation is better than #Tarnished" you can think of replacing him with someone else.

The great "Reputation Spiral of Death" is that someone rebels, you bash them and take their title, thus giving more BB, making other vassals angry, who then rebel, and you take their titles, thus gaining worse reputation, etc. etc.

Apart from the marriage duties that bring gold in, there's a nice event that pops up. It is the one saying 'your steward friend has earned you gold etc.'. The gold amount is usually a bumper amount. Marry off the ruler to a wife with high stewardship, make her the steward, and ensure (through events) that they become friends (no adultery, 'marriage of love' etc.). One of the most recent times, my ruler's wife earned him 1K-ish gold. My eyes bulged at the amount. Of course the event may not fire at all, but worth the try.
