Open enough ports so you can connect.

Depends on host's upload bandwith, cpu speed, memory (ranked in the order of importance) below normal or slow may be required, perhaps even slower, depends on situation. It also depends on how fast the players are connected to host. If you have players from all over the world connect to host, it's going to be slow. EA currently has 9 players, 4 USA, 1 Norwegian, 1 Swede, 1 Scott, 1 Dutch, 1 Swiss and game proceed fine, except in big wars.

CTD can be fairly common. One consistent, reproducible CTD is annex of a civilized AI nation with alliances. So, before a player is about to annex, pause, let everyone's speed catch up (host can be say Sep 20 while slower player will still see August 10 on their screen so you need to let everyone's turn catch up), save, then annex. Some players will CTD but sometimes, not all players so so to be safe, see if everyone's around, if not, quit, rehost :(

We only use bug fixes, DR's education fix bug (so event and technology that change education cost will work), ACW fix (if you have USA playing as reconstruction will never fire right now), and stock hause fix (so it will fire to counter the effect of stock market crash).
