I have just noticed this game and as a fan of the Dwarf Fortress I have a question - could anyone tell me how is this game different from that one in matter of complexity and mechanics?

Hi Dysydent!

We already have a thread for this kind of topic here:

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?592473-DK-vs-DF

To read up more on what A Game Of Dwarves is I recommend our Dev-blogs which can be found here:

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...es-quot-developer-diaries-(deluxe)-collection!

And I think Thommy sums it up very well:

Well, A Game of Dwarves is foremost it's own game and neither Dwarf Fortress nor Dungeon Keeper. :)
It does share elements with both games though.

One element it does not share with DF is Dwarf Fortress'es Complexity.

Hope that to some degree answered your question :)

without the complexity and all the interactions between the dorfs and such I just don't know if I could get as into this game after playing DF for so long. If I don't have to worry about a tantrum spiral because dorfs fav cat died what in the world is going to keep me playing?

Thanks a lot for your answer! ;)

If AgoD can manage to not be a complete push-over on difficulty like DF is then THAT would keep me interested in it. As anyone who has actually gotten over the DF UI learning CLIFF (which I have) will readily attest the game underneath all that surface difficulty is laughably easy once you learn a few basic fortress layout methods (infinite food farms, draw-bridges of total invulnerability, manufacturing for export, cat-neutering), indeed 99% of fortresses die of excessive LAG and player BOREDOM not the supposed 'uber difficulty'.

I think the two best things from DF was the tantrum* spirals and the ability to make awesome machines/devices out of various materials either to do practical stuff or impractical stuff.

Like a turing complete computer within dwarf fortress.

Maybe its a little much to expect that level of complexity but being able to take a river and use water to power stuff like lifts, draw bridges, pumps, rails and so on would be nice long term thing.

*As one of the above posters says, seeing the fairly and surprisingly deep dwarf interactions.

Lets see only 20 levels deep all visiable at once which makes looking at it difficult. 13 campaign missions with set objectives. Sandbox mode with no monsters unless you spawn em.... I was excited about this game now no so much

You don’t quite have your facts right there. But since I’m still under the NDA, we will have to wait for a Dev to set you straight. But just so no one else thinks what you said is true – it’s not.
;-)

Hi Sabre909, as Xerkis says you got some of your facts a bit off.

The game is more than 20 levels deep!

All layers are not visible at the same time. The amount of visable layers will be around 7. It is a balance between easy to overlook while still gives you that good felling of mightiness when you build something really cool.

Sandbox mode have monsters. But you can turn off Monsters when you start a Custom Game if want a just Build-game.

If you have any questions about this just ask :)

You say the game is more than 20 levles deep, exactly how many levels deep is it then?

I ask because I'm quite used to marketing speak, and when a player states, "... only 20 levles deep..." and the developer says "... more than 20 levels deep..." For some developers/publishers what that translates to really is "the game is 23 levels deep".

So just how many levels deep is it then?

Also I have a couple other questions...

1. I didn't expect it to be released quite so soon and certainly not at $9.99
Was anything left out or cut out of the game and that's why it's $9.99 or was the plan all along to sell it for $9.99?

2. Is the game moddable? For example can a modder add things like new decorations to the game to be used you know... to decorate rooms and what not in the game?

Thanks

Fair point. I refrained to say an exact number cause it really depends on what level you are playing. Between 25-35 is an better answer but there are levels that go as deep as 40.

1) I can't really answer questions about the pricing. Not my area and more a question towards Paradox. But the game is very similar to what we set out to do so the price does not reflect any large cuts in the game.

Some Features we designed did not make it into the finished product but those features are always changed with other features we felt was better suited for the game. But that is common practice in the Game-Industry, you design a game thinking some features will be really cool, and than when you start making the game and "feel" it you realize another feature would be better.

2) Unfortunately no.

Is it possible to build structures above earth? I'd like to have a nice entrance for my dwelling :)
