Well, I got the game from Impulse, and so far I'm having a blast. Diplomacy is exactly what you can expect from a 4x game, and I'm not seeing any issues with the AI (although they never seem to have any gold).
DavidWalsh, thank you, I wish I'd known that before.
I won't use Paypal largely because I don't like making accounts everywhere, and also because of the boycott over wikileaks.

Hehe, I knew you'd like it. Once you get good, just start ignoring the AI most the time and conquer the different worlds or something. With Armegeddon, let Dremers destroy most of the world and just work on expanding and restoring the land before porting in. You can control a large continents game in ~200 turns if you want. There are a ton of different strategies you can try and different combinations of units you can use. Near endless fun... haha.

Also, when I played impossible Armageddon one game, I traded some spell and a treaty with one of the AI mages for over 5000 gold. I even have the saved game to prove it. Yes, the AI does get gold and they will trade it to you in Armageddon mode...

Thanks brxbrs.
Good to hear you are enjoying the game :)
If you find it gets easy there are some good threads with discussions about strategies to increase the difficulty a bit.

I have a few questions about the game, if you guys don't mind.

Do difficulty settings change the AI's competence and behavior or does it just give the AI bonuses and the player penalties?
I'm not seeing the AI go for pickups. Is it just me or does it not do that?

Also, I know I sound like I'm complaining about the AI, but I am actually very impressed by the way it handles combat, with spells, formations, proper use of archers and all that good stuff. I am even beginning to suspect that the AI checks what spell you're casting and acts accordingly. I prepare an AoE spell, and the next turn all the enemies have scattered. If that's really what's happening, damn. Other developers can take tips from Ino-Co Plus.

One of the developers said here a couple of weeks ago that at higher difficulties the AI gets more resources...but it runs the same algorithms.
As far as I know the player is not handicapped.
Some players adopt house-rules that restrict them a little...such as racial purity; and only building a city if you conquor one. This makes the game a little more challenging. There are some threads here that discuss such things.
Many say the AI does not make optimal use of many game systems; as you have noticed. A player who knows the game systems and takes full advantage of then will completely outclass the AI armies by mid-game.
Myself I think the AI does a good job of providing an enjoyable dynamic game experience; which is not the same thing as mounting a real threat. Realistically only another human will do that for a player who knows the game.

Another question, is Koatl Training bugged? I don't see any of my units with it

AFAIK it's added "silently", without a buff or other icon of some sort. Just check the base stats of the units in a different game or in the wiki for comparison and you'll most likely see the bonus added. :)
