I'm playing this game for the first time, on the SotsVerse map (7 player map, 6 factions) as SolForce, with the AI on Easy (because there is no tutorial that I could find and I knew I'd have to learn everything on the fly - heck I didn't even know there was a manual until turn 150 or so). It's now around turn 350ish, and I don't think I'm even a quarter of the way through the techs (maybe halfway in one or two areas, going by the wiki, several others I haven't touched at all yet). I've expanded a fair bit with 20-odd systems and a number of provinces, but expansion still feels quite slow with all the fleet basing management, travel times, occasional invasion by an unfriendly neighbour, incessant Swarm attacks (probably averaging one incident every 2nd turn) and so on. I still have no real idea where anyone is except one alien faction that (for reasons unknown to me) offered an alliance which I accepted. The enemy faction doesn't seem to be particularly ahead of me in tech, but maybe they just aren't fielding their best stuff (since the AI is on Easy). My income grows slowly because expanding also means making more fleets to deal with all the attacks, raising my expenses. I am finally managing a net 2M research or so after focusing on trade for a long while and not expanding very much (not many easily-reachable systems available right now, and those ridiculous Von Neumann Berserkers occasionally blast one of my systems to slag and seem to return very shortly if I try to recolonize it, so I've lost a few systems permanently as well), though probably I'm missing some essential techs somewhere that provide empire-wide boosts.

Long story short, my game is progressing, but I don't actually feel like I'm getting anywhere fast after 350 turns, particularly as the time for each turn can be rather long, between the increasingly long turn resolution, tedious Swarm fighting between turns, and so on :) How long is a "normal" game? I assume I'm probably behind the curve as I didn't know what I was doing at the start (and still don't know my way around the tech trees), but are games typically over by now or are they 1000+-turn marathons like a Civ game?

On the particular map and number of AI's that you've chosen, 1000+ is easily possible. On a small map with one AI 150-250 turn games are pretty normal. Really depends on the map, the number of AI and how high you set the randoms and number of Grand Menaces you have. Then this can be farther modified by the type of victory condition you set (+/-). So if you want a quicker game/match, use smaller maps with less AI. Enjoy!

Sotvers is one of the largest maps in the game. So the games will take a long time complet. But yes this game can go on. Or you can play a MP game in say fight and not reach turn 100. Basicaly it gets the same anserw most qustions get. Depends. If you play a larg map lots of players you get a long game small map few players a short game. All so it is not expected of you to get all techs(unless you want the achement for it) but you need to make a choice on what you need. Do I want a better laser or improved armor or even trade. Then each race all so has a difrent tech speed. Liri tech up the fastes and the zuul are realy backwards. Of course zuul can steal techs better.

Has to straight anserw. Depends on the map. I have personaly never finshed Sotvers once I reach around turn 600 I get bored. By then there is no hope for the AI and it is only a matter of logists before I win. My recmandtion. Once a game gets boring restart no need to frustraight your self just to finsh a game.

Thanks for the replies :) I'm not ready to start a new game yet, still a lot to learn from this one I think - like how can I change the focus of the camera in tactical combat instead of always having it follow one specific ship, often some useless noncombat ship that I don't even want to have near the fighting!

Ah I figured it out the camera bit, I had to focus on a particular ship, I was trying to double-click in space like I could do in the Battle Manager but nothing would happen - thank again :)
