In pre-dance starts or in custom worlds i've found 1/2 dragons at start could easily lead to dozens a few centuries in. Is there any way for dragons to die out other than massive civil wars?

I don't think they do live forever (clearly long lives mind). Had a notification about one just going to sleep and never waking up again. Don't do much dragon play myself mind.

He said die out, not die.

Which means 'how often do dragons go extinct'.

And for me the answer is pretty much never, but that's because I enjoy the chaos involved in having way too many dragons around at once so I use the easy setting in the game rules.

To OP; what's your game rule for dragon hatching and taming chance?

Even when I start post-dance, and even when I start where its only the few eggs left they always seem to come back and explode in population

Be nice for an option to make them rarer if anything, but also the capacity to breed them with severe penalties for owning too many 3+.
I would also be happy if the Last Dragon eggs were modified so that the dragons that came from them had a good chance of being misshapen and maimed. I always find it odd that they are still able to produce strong agile dragons.
