How do I join the US SOI? As South Africa, shouldn't I automatically be part of it, even at game start?

Also, somewhat unconnected, but is the UN actually modeled in the game (like Security Council votes, etc.)?

The political spheres in this game are very complicated matters. As a non-aligned nation, about the only thing you can do is always support anything the counties in you target sphere do and condem everything the other sphere does. It's a slow process, but it will inch you closer. Swaying influence as one of the Superpowers is a completely different matter as there are dozens of variables that have an affect on sphere from space-race progress to how much oil that sphere has in reserve.

Okay; I figured it would be something like that. Anything on my UN question?

I'd heard from previous posters that the US more or less fails every game in eight years; has that been fixed with this most recent update?
