Ok, I feel each day as a slow torture... I can't wait for this game much longer!!

I have one question though, before I go completely bonkers. (A strange question, perhaps, but I have yet to actually try this game)

If I'm playing denmark in the GC, and I for an example declare war on Portugal with the sole purpose of taking Cap Verde, would this island actually make it easier for me to discover/travel to America? Or will the port there not benefit me in any way?

The reason for my question is that I would love to be one of the first to go and colonize America. Another thing, somewhere in one of all these posts I saw that Denmark only got 2 discoverers... And my guess is they will arrive late in the game... Is it still possible to 'discover' land in the new world??? Can the ships do this? Also to discover 'Guldkysten' in Africa, where Denmark had a series of forts overseeing a quite lucrative slavetrade... Would this not be possible without having an explorer there to discover it first?

(I realise that you could trade for the maps, but hey, then you might trade for a map of spanish vacation spots on the Spanish main. No good!)

Thanx! :)

My experience is, that a sea port that is closer to a spot you want to reach will help you to reach it. With this you can reduce the 'months at sea' and thus the losses you have to bear on that travel.

The new sea port will NOT help you to discover anything. You need explorers and conquistadors to do that OR a high marine technology.

In your case you should probably focus on developing the technology, building up a fleet and invasion forces and to trade with maps. Try to get them from minors that are close friends of Spain or Portugal. You don't have to be the first one to get the cake in the end...

So I see no possibility for Denmark to discover America first. You might 'hire' Columbus by editing the scenario file, though. ;)

No need to be puzzled, the Dutch had a couple historically; how else would they have settled South Africa, settled/conquered the Dutch East Indies (nowadays Indonesia), New Amsterdam (New York), Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Formosa (Taiwan), the Dutch West Indies (Netherlands Antilles), Suriname, Parts of Brasil, and a couple of other (temporary) holdings.
This is represented in the game by the historic conquistadors.

Ok, point taken, but then again... Denmark had some colonies too... Like the Virgin Islands (St. Croix, St. Thomas & St. Jan/John), Trankebar (in India I think) and a series of forts overlooking slavetrade on the coast of Africa. I guess Denmark just 'happened' to stumble across these? ;)

Some minor colonial nations, like Sweden and Denmark get a few colonists from the dynamism database too. Just try to get maps, and then start your own colonies.
