How to chat in internet MP game?

I'm trying to play an internet multiplayer game against my brother in another state. We connect fine and all that but can't figure out how to chat during the game? The manual shows a chat screen but we can't figure out how to bring it up. Does that only work on Valkyrienet? If so, that sucks.
