I has the same issue as I am not a creative type person. So what I did was just make a single 1-tile city and fill it up as best I could without mods.

When it collapsed (usually traffic jam at the entrance), then I would just start a new city on a different map and try again.

By the 8th or 9th try, I figured it out and now the game is much easier to play.

After that, I just watched other people's videos on youtube to get ideas and in no time I was able to find my playstyle.

But the 1-tile method was my way I figured out the game. Just try to fill it up to around 50k pop. and you should be golden.

The terrain in the game is lumpy and bumpy. Learn to use the terraform tools.
* Have a test world.
* Open a map and select unlimited everything.
* Play with the settings of the tools to become comfortable with using them.
* Make a mess by terraforming around water. Always fun.
* Try adding quays. Straight and level. Good luck.
* Trains, Metros, Trams look better with smooth tracks. Learn to make nice sweeping curves and nice smooth grades when the terrain is hilly.
* Humans do move mountains to manipulate our world. Do not be afraid to do the same. It's just a game.
* You can save or delete you test world and try again if you like.
*
*
* Plant a tree. Woo!
* Now 2 trees. Nice.
* If your bold plant 3 trees. Odd numbers are aesthetically pleasing to our eyes. Let's call these a clump of trees. Try planting clusters of clumps. Now your decorating. Experiment with the plant types. I often match the types to what is on the map. But do not hesitate to try something new. On my favorite desert map I changed all the plant types, I preferred the new.
* Add paths ( some paths self level, use this to your advantage) , rocks, fencing and assorted decorations and your off to your maps style. Save or delete as you learn.
* Watch YouTube. I like a good city fix with Biffa. Let's you see other people's cities and suggestions, some good(slip lanes) and some bad( take time to make it look nice). It's a city fix not how to decorate. I'm console, so modded is not my thing, but I like Fewcandy 's decorative style. Leaning to vanilla, Overchargedeggs style translates well to console. Who else does anyone like and why?
* Have fun.
