I saw the photo in the dev diary showing a galaxy with 5000 stars and immediately fell in love.
For me, one of the main attraction with Paradox games has always been the way you only interact with a small part of the map, while the rest of it continues as ambient simulation.

I'd love to re-create that feelinng ASAP after launch.

But how do I mod this?
I'm sure it will be as simple as editing a string in a text file, but what file? What string?
I'm at a loss where to begin.

I would be interested to know what the performance of such a map would be like first, but if its not too prohibitive then I would be very interested in running a game on a 5000 star galaxy.

We will only know once it comes out. There will have to be a file for galaxy configuration somewhere.
Try asking one of the press release streamers to have a look at the files for you?

There are two way. One is to change the number that limits how high you can go for random galaxy generation and the other would be to make it a static map. For the static map you will need to code a line for every star systems position on a x,y grid.
Check out the last Dev Diary about modding.

There is a video on youtube on how to edit star size for random generated galaxys.

Very nice. Only problem with those files is that they should say what kind of units the radius, and size of stuff is in. Likely by star count.

imagine the length of a GC with such a huge Galaxy (maybe even bigger)... Glorious!

I would like to see the performance impact and if it doesn´t work well then poke Paradox until they optimize the Game for such Galaxies

Well, using the video, I've created a few custom galaxy sizes. The largest housing 6k stars, I'm quite sure this will cause horrible mid game slowdown.
I certainly can't wait to try them on Monday.

It will be interesting to see how many stars 32 bit will be able to handle.

Next would be interesting how to create a static Galaxy. I'm preparing one at the moment in defining all the locations of 3.000 starsystems

Just some news for random galaxy modding, galaxy radius is capped at 500. (This is not my image)
Going higher than that causes this.

I would assume so.
Galaxy size could also be tweaked by changing the core percentage to something lower than 0.3 (30%)

Static galaxies might not be limited by this however. But I have no way of confirming this.
Dense galaxies don't sound that bad anyway.

Edit: Having watched the video again, there seems to be a percentage value when it comes to the amount of stars in the core. So we may be able to change it to allow a very dense accumulation of stars in the centre of galaxies in generation.

This may all be speculation. But I'm going to experiment when I get the game tomorrow.

Hmm. This is disapointing. I'd wager this is a limitation of the engine, but i'd be happy to see this being a limitation of the base lua file for generating the galaxy, meaning it could be edited and changed to fix this.

Looks like we can make the core smaller. I wonder if 10% would be a good size for the core. I would also make stars min size smaller as well. Also it looks like you can add worlds to the core if you wanted to.
