How to determine if a Rival Colony grabbed a milestone?

Milestones are only granted to the first colony that reaches them, correct?

I have found (and exploited) water but didn't get the milestone. If I look at other colonies, none of them have water production and the logs don't indicate any milestones (just stuff like 'Built a moxie"). How do I tell if/which one grabbed the milestone?

Edit: Played for .5 sol more and got the announcement/red X in my milestone log. Not sure why I didn't get it, since I'm definately producing water from a water extractor.

Hi, GrimerX! This milestone is about finding a Water deposit. Probably, one of the Rival Colonies has found one before you. The milestone should be marked with a red X in your Milestones log, and accompanied by the name of the rival who managed to complete it first.

Thanks for the response! I did eventually figure it out. However, I don’t understand why I lost the milestone. Here are the sequence of Events that happened:

1. I got a rumor that another colony was close to the water milestone.
2. My scan completed and I found water
3. I exploited the water resource (I didn’t bring an evaporator to save on funding)
4. The milestone was still unclaimed at this point.
5. The rival colony then claimed it.

Sounds like a bug then?

Yes, sounds like a bug, and a peculiar one. The game can't block you from claiming the milestone until it's actually claimed by the rival, as far as I know.

I had a similar experience, but it wasn't quite the same. In my game, I found water and didn't get the milestone. Some time later, I finally built an extractor on the water and did get the milestone. I'm not sure why I needed the extractor, though. In other games, I was able to get the achievement just by finding the water.

I can't remember if I've tried this with the Hydro Engineer commander profile. Does the guaranteed water deposit count for the milestone? Do you have to explore that sector to get it, even though you already know about the water? What if you start with water in your first sector?
