I'm sorry if this has been discussed to the death but I tried unsuccesfully looking through the old
messages for help on howto edit the names for the random leaders (i.e. the colonels) the country
receives. if I remember correctly there are two RandomLeaders.csv files, one in the db directory
and one in the Leaders subdirectory, I tried playing around with them, but have so far been
unsuccesfull.

A spesific example: I wanted to add a new potential country Finland
to the (standard) GC so I took the unused KAL (Union of Kalmar)
tag and edited config/ text.csv, db/monarchs/monarchs.kal, the diplomatical
matrix, revolt.something, etc. I downloaded the Finnish graphics from McGuinn's
site (thanks a lot, great work!!!) and tested it by making an scenario with Finland
already present. It all worked nice but the leaders (both random and others
were Swedish!) How come? I didn't even create a leaders.kal file so I assumed
the country would not be given any historical leaders, and although I had added
few lines like

KAL;Stålhandske
KAL;Mannerheim
KAL;K. Erme

to the random leaders file all the random leaders I got (by splitting and reorganizing
armies) were Swedish. And why did I get Swedish historical leaders also?
All the other things seemed to be working OK, the army names/navy names were
the ones I had given in the proper files.

Cheers,
H.

[For those interested in details: I made Finland to be able appear after 1550
after succesful rebellion of course, with Finland as the capital province, potentially
containing also the other Finnish provinces. I didn't feel Finland was developed enough
before 1550 to be able to stand on it's own. Historically Finland was created in 1809 after
Russia had conquered all the Finnish porvinces from Sweden, as an
autonomous Grand Duchy, a part of the Russian Empire, however having its
own laws, own goverment (Senate), own citizens (Russians were not citizens
of Finland) , own army, own money etc., that is, everything an independent country
had, except an own foreign policy ]

Hello,

I'm replying to myself...I hope this isn't a sympton of split personality or some other mental disorder. For the benefit of other newbies tweaking the GC to their tastes I just wanted to add that I cleared up my 'Why do I get Swedish (SWE) historical leaders for Finland (KAL)' - question. It was simple, really, I had just overlooked to change the unit ID for the unit I copied&pasted from the 1492.inc sweden entry for my own 1492f.inc file, and hence there existed two units with
identical unit IDs -> I received all the leaders Sweden had stacked with her 'version' of the unit.

But the first part of the question still stands: How do I give RANDOM leaders to KAL tag? (adding historical ones was a breeze, it just required some grep commands to ensure that I didn't pick any IDs already in use. At the monent this is just a theoretical problem, as I don't indent to make any scenarios with independent, playable Finland (it will remain purely a potential country that can only be born through revolution). But for I'd like know how to do that just in case I find some other countries I might want to implement for some possible scenario.

BTW: is it necessary to check BOTH monarchs and leaders files for possible duplicate IDs when adding own leaders (or monarchs) ?, or would it suffice to check just the other leaders.* files when adding leaders, and just the other monarchs.* files when adding monarchs. In other words: are the categories for leaders and monarchs separate or does having a same ID for a monarch and a leader (or vice versa ;) lead into problems ?

I'd be thankful for any help/pointers etc.

Cheers,

H.

Digging more deeply into the IGC thread gave me the answer I asked here in vain: It is not possible to edit colonels for every country, for some tags the default names are apparently hardcoded, i.e. KAL has scandinavian names etc. Now whether this means that KAL always accesses Swedish (SWE) or Danish (DAN) colonel names from the random leaders file, or if the names are actually hardcoded, isn't clear, but one could always test this by doing some RandomLeaders.* editing.

Has any of you IGC/Scenario Gurus thought about writing a Scenario Creating FAQ/HOWTO ? There seems to be so much stuff hardcoded in the game that is not obvious from just looking at the text files, so we newbie tweakers would greatly benefit from your knowledge. Basic editing is easy, and much can be learned by looking at the various files for GC and
IGC, but some things are just impossible to anticipate.

Cheers, H.
