I download it then it says that windows cannot find how to open it, im gussing since it is a .rar file. What do I do?

You need an application that can extract .rar-file, like WinRAR f.e.
Just Google for WinRAR and you will find several sites from which you can download a free trial-version.
downloaded a winrar trial version 3.9364 bit, and then clicked the DV patch and it came up, but when I clicked on the crusaders.exe file it says "critical error - excel file not found".
Did I do something wrong?

To get things clear
1. You extracted the beta-patch into your main Crusader Kings folder
2. You then started the game and got the above error
The beta-patch is for Deus Vult, do you have Deus Vult ?
If yes, is it properly installed ? Deus Vult should be installed on top of Crusader Kings, it should be in a separate directory.

How is it that the 2.1 patch is still in beta? Isn't it over 2 years old now? Have the dev's given up on it?
