greeting :p

I would love to play the GC with one of the smaller nations, for example one of the italian states or even brandenburg or something, but this doesn't seem to be an option... however, I keep seeing posts referring to players running the papal states and so on so I'm thinking I'm missing something.
please advise.

go to the FAQ section as there are a number of older threads which detail the relatively simple changes you can make to the scenario file to play any country of your choice, even non-european countries. Playing as a minor can be a great experience, if not a little humbling. I am playing Tuscany in a GC now after just finishing my first as Russia. Talk about 2 very different styles of play. You will find that you will be concentrating on trade and diplomacy more with a minor, and you have to play a much more oppportunistic style. As the Russian I could essentially count on wearing out any opponent I wnated to fight in a war. As one of the de Medici rulers of Tuscany, I simply do not have the economic base to even consider such an approach, at least not if I don't want to bankrupt myself.

Enjoy the game it is a great one!

hutier,
Make a new copy of the scenario file that you wish to use, rename it, open it with a word processor, and then change one of the eight country abbreviations listed there (e.g. FRA for France, HAB for Austria) to the abbreviation of the country you wish to play (e.g. HUN for Hungary, VEN for Venice).

Yes someway down the text.csv file you'll find the list...after line 2000 I beleive... it's about 50-100 lines long so if you quickly scroll down with pagedown you should be able to find it...

eureka!

thanks for the advice guys.. I'm now the proud (but slightly troubled) monarch of sweden at the turn of the 16th century. The dastardly danes (sorry for the alliteration) jumped me right off the bat but were foiled and lost Skane (as they rightly deserved) after a series of looooong sieges and a war of attrition. I am now sitting pretty with the Danes locked in an alliance with hated Russia and as a result can flex any of my minor power muscle. This is certainly more fun than just romping all over the board with the french as I did in my first GC and it really is a sobering reminder of the nature of diplomacy and trade (model UN eat your heart out!).

as a sidebar anyone reading this far might be pleased to learn that I thoroughly intend to free my native Iceland from the oppression of danish colonial rule and replace it with a very benign swedish patronage ;)
