I'm pretty sure that there were some hints how to mod CK so that knight templars and merchant republics could be played, by altering the succession laws etc.
As a matter of fact it's not an if but an how question.
 
^: Their law isn't really elective, though, it's a hard-coded law similar to elective, IIRC.

The main problem would be that you would have to save right when a ruler dies, then re-edit the save file, some events not being designed for the player and the fact that you have no demesne limit (or at least didn't have in 1.05, don't know about DV that much, but I guess not). It is definitely possible to play them without many CTDs, though.
