I was just playing Britain and noticed that the 1941 battleship model for them was the Vanguard-class. Since historically those were probably closer to the "semi-modern" battleship and I wanted to play with Lions, I decided to tweak the model names so that it would go

1938->KGV
1941->Lion
1946->Vanguard

I looked around the AoD folders and found a file "models.csv" that looked like it had all that sort of stuff in it, and went ahead and made the changes, but when I went back and restarted the game, nothing had changed. Did I edit the right file? Is there some special thing I have to do to get it to accept my edits?

Did you start a completely new game or did you load your old save file? Any changes done in files does not have any effect in save games done before that IIRC.

There should be a file called model_names.csv. Country-specific model names go there.

models.csv is the correct file to modify if you want to change unit modelnames or so. Unit_names.csv is for division names in case if you are mixing the two up.

Yep, my bad.

I tried both, actually, and neither worked. What happened (it turns out) was that when I went to back up the existing models.csv file in case I messed something up (which was wise, because I *did* mess something up), I accidentally saved the edited version instead of the original version, leaving the actual game version intact. When I figured that out, it was pretty trivial to fix, along with the mistake I made editing the file itself. Now to add in the F-4 and F-106 for the US...

I'm currently looking into some minor changes to model names, but when I try to save the .csv file I get a message telling me that some data may be lost. I don't know how to properly save the file in Excel. What is the right way to do this?

When I want to save a .csv file I've modded, I just close it (not the whole Excel) and click twice "yes" when told about possible issues.

I've modded hundreds of lines this way, saved and it always worked fine.

Can you tell me which version of Excel do you have? Or rather, which Office version? Apparently mine is incompatible with the file version of the csv files AoD uses, because I choose the same options and the alternative is that I select a different excel version but Excel doesn't explain what it means by that... Where's Clippy when you need him? :S

MS Excel 2002.

Just ignore the advices it gives you and save the files. It should work... at least it does for me.

you can modify those files with notepad or notepad++
as for the mess with saving the files, if you use win7 (or vista AFAIK), try to copy your game to another place (eg C/GAMES/AOD) and not in C/programs/AoD
then it wont refuse to save anymore

Notepad did the trick for me! I hadn't tried that yet, thought the file was too big. Apparantly my old Excel version is not compatible or something. *shrug*

Anyway, it works now! I gave the Dutch their Fokker G-1 interceptors, the De Ruyter class cruisers, the British the Lion class battleships... All is well with the world! :)
