How do I use the Magellan programs?

For now I'd settle for a square grid...once I can do that, I can try a real map.

From the very basic documentation on http://www.inferis.org/eu2/magellan/, it appears that mextract.exe is the first one to run.

I tried double clicking on the mextract.exe file, but I get only an error:
"The applicaton failed to initialize properly (0xc000135). Click on OK ot terminate the applicaton."

Same error if I use the "run" option on the Start Menu, or if I run them from the command prompt.

Maybe I installed it in the wrong directory?
(I put the Magellan programs in the same directory as EU2)

Maybe I donwloaded a Linux version??
(I only saw one version so if it's for Linux I guess I'm out of luck)

Also, the tools are command line tools, so you can't use them from windows explorer. Open up a commandline and use a "<tool>.exe /?" command to get help for each tool.

You need to use mextract to extract the map from the EU2 files, or you can use it create a new blanco map. You'll get a eu2map file on which you can use mimage to export and import psd files. You can use minject to get the updated map back into the game itself.

There's more to it, but you'll need to expertiment a bit with it. ;)

Translating from tech-speak, this means that you need to open up a command prompt (if using XP, click start>all programs>accessories>command prompt), you will now be presented with a black window showing
Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]>
, to use mextract, type the path where mextract is located, and add/?, for example, it might look like this: (REMEMBER THE QUOTES)
Code:
"C:\program files\paradox entertainment\Europa Universalis 2\mextract.exe" /?
you will then be presented with a list of options, work out which to use.
