Hey everybody, just wanted to know as of right now how the AI of the game is. I got the impression the game is finally working feature wise and stability wise, and with the holiday sales I thought I might get it, but the game is really worthless to me if it hasn't got a challenging AI (I don't care if it cheats to be challenging so long as it is challenging). So does this game have a solid AI that can put up a fight? And if not, does the games multiplayer make up for it (by having drop in drop out or short burst games with plenty of active players at any time)?

Thanks.

The AI is not challenging and I cannot comment on the multiplayer as I am a solo kind of guy ;)

Even on hard the AI (25% increase in cheating parameters) is still easy. The enemy fleets don't seem to counter your tech ie still send heaps of drones against point defense heavy fleets. I had a CTD bug one game so decided to switch to another AI player one turn and then go back to my race, the AI that had taken over my race destroyed my economy in one turn that took me ages to get back to positive cashflow by building crap all over the place that made no sense. I would win 95% of the fleet battles.

keep in mind, i am still playing my first game, where i actually think i know what im doing............

i noticed, on easy, the ai expands pretty quickly. they build buffer planets sooooomewhat effectively. as far as technology, i dont know if they research stuff that makes sense or not because i dont know the game that well, and i cant tell what weapons they have by the graphics in the tactical battles for the same reason. also i dont know if, say antimatter torpedos and regular torpedos have different graphic effects. in combat they are, so far, 100 percent effective at sending pain in the butt forces to kill off most or all of my population in a colony, so they can make good use of ass. shuttles. and in general head to head combat they send balanced fleets to me, which are effective to a degree. but its after turn 300 and ive had dreads for a while, and i havent seen the humans build a single one, so.......

if most of the people play vs. ai's and enough people say something, i think the ai could be pretty challenging. and i dont mean in a soase way where they just add 3 more cheating ai difficulties, but actually make it plan better. after all, the game has changed into something amazing since release, which granted it shouldve been like that at release. but i work in "customer service'' and these guys put alot of work into fixing the game, if they did the same with the ai, i think it would be pretty tough.

thanks for the hard work dev team and anyone else

So it seems the AI is flawed, but how's the multiplayer? Does it have an active base of players playing daily?

The AI is good at some things and not so good on others. You can learn somewhat what it is good at by using automatic on combat mode and watching what it does with your ships. What you will find is that the AI is good at using particular types of ships on certain missions For instance I found it does pretty good when it uses troop transports to attack a planet. But when it comes to taking a system, the AI makes a lot of poor decisions. For instance, I chose auto with a full cruiser fleet attacking an opponent AI system and then watched as 3/4 of the fleet went and attacked a defensive satellite far from the planet before attacking the relatively undefended home world. If it is doing that to you, you know it is doing it to the AI as well.

The AI is doing much better at ship combat and ship design. I lose ships in combat now regularly if not whole fleets. That did not happen before. The computer is much better at this during the dreadnaught stage then the cruiser stage. The only thing I have not seen it use much of is Torpedoes still for some reason.

The AI is doing a much better job at deploying defensive assets.

The AI is doing better diplomatically but still seems unsure of how to handle an alliance, and there are not as many tools available to make the alliance more immersive (attack here, defend here, treaties to automate aid.)

I would have to say from my experience if you are at war with 2 empires and they are not attacking you, chances are they cannot get to where you are at yet, are building fleets, or have more than one concurrent war going and cannot get to you at the second. Because when you are at war, they will attack if they can.

The AI still needs some loving. I think it is also map-dependent - I understand they use the 'terrain' at the strategic level. Their designs aren't the newest possible, either - which I think is a hallmark of their strategic building queues more than anything else.

I am desperately waiting for them to focus on AI, which I think is next. And I hope that includes some diplomacy.

Well after I've read up about the game I decided it's probably not done yet. I still want to pick it up, but only when it's ready, and if that's a year from now, that's fine.

I agree. I always play solo, so a game designed primarily to be a great multiplayer game is useless to me. <sigh> I have waited awhile now, I can wait longer.

I dont realy do the beat patches. can never get them to work. But yes it help in there stragic thinking. And loa can slw boat meaning you can launch full size LV fleets with no worry with the gate limt. Of course they will move slow but a la LV fleet is insane when you dont need to worry about the gate limte

You enable it through the steam interface. (right click game name -> properties -> beta tab.

It's possible that you might need a password from the Kerberos beta forum, not sure about that. (I enabled beta patches quite some time ago)
