The Holy Roman Empire and how its Emporer is elected is the part of this game that I least understand. Could someone enlighten me?

In particular:

Who can be Holy Roman Emporer?
Do they have to own an HRE province? (don't think so - I have seen Spain be HRE without one)?
Must they be Catholic?

Who are the electors?
Are they restricted to the HRE themselves, and if not (which I think is true) then why not?
Is there an elector for each province or each state?
Must they be Catholic? (historically the answer would be no)
Do they vote based on relations only or are there other factors?

My questions stem from some frustration at trying to make myslef HRE. I would have thought that >+100 relations with all the electors and being the only Catholic nation left with provinces in the HRE would be enough. Apparently not. (bug?)
 
Emperor of HRE- any catholic nation within it's borders.

You can find out if you are within borders from the religious map: the area within red line is HRE. Electors are most of the nations within (exept Hansa, including Prussia).
Spanish Lowlands are part of HRE, so they can be elected.

Only catholic can be emeror of HRE, so if elector is protestant, he has no hope.

Every state elects bar the Italian states, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

U have to be a form of catholicism to be elected.

Strangely enough u don't need to own a province there (seen that a lot)

this one can't be true since I have seen spain lose all of the lowlands and still get elected emporer.

Another strange thing. Anyone know why the HRE territory deforms around the French, so that France can never be HRE?
 
Because France is the antipode of the HRE. Remants of Charlemagne's Empire divisions. France and the HRE basically after some time.

If Turks take a province it also goes for example. Holland too.

I am playing Austria in my GC.My state religion is Catholic.I too was wondering about this. Spain has always been Emperor in my game , and was wondering if Spains' almost constant warfare w/German States is ever going to have an impact on it chances of beeing re-elected to Emperor.I myself am trying also to become Emperor.
 
I was playing Spain, kept the Dutch provinces, swallowed several minors (Saxony, Brandenburg, Hesse, Papal States, Naples, Genoa, etc.), gulped up about 10 French provinces in Europe, chomped up some English provinces in the New World as well as Kent and the damn Austrians are always declared Holy Roman Emperor. I own half the German provinces I think and still I lose.
 
It can't be down to popularity since I am the only Catholic state with an HRE province and have >100+ relations with all the electors! And they hate Spain.

Is this a bug?

Some feedback from paradox on the mechanisms would be good.

Seriously, I don't know if this will help or not, but... I was able to be elected HRE several times as Austria. I tried to maintain good relations with as many of the electorates as possible (plus, I think I had my own vote). When I finally lost it, there were two reasons for it: 1) the number of electorates had been drastically reduced due to annexations both by me and by other states; 2) the relations of the HRE state were better with more of the electors than mine were.

Caveat, this was not in 1.08, or even 1.07 or 1.06, so maybe something has changed (?). Btw, when I finally lost an election, I lost it to Genoa, so I guess being a major power or even being an elector count has nothing to do with it.
 
Anyone been elected Emperor in 1.08?

I've been playing this game pretty much non-stop since I got it a few weeks back - and enjoying every minute! :)

But this HRE question has me wondering. As Austria & now Poland-Lithuania, despite good relations with the rest of the HRE & being Catholic, my king has never been elected Emperor. Admittedly, I have never totally gone all out to get the title, but it seems odd that only AI countries ever get elected - Spain when I was Austria, & Austria now that I'm Poland.

So I ask, has any player ever been elected Emperor under 1.08 or even 1.07? Nobody above in this thread has said that they have, so I wonder if it is actually possible. Of course, human players rarely maintain good relations with as many nations as the AI tends to - we've got better ways to spend out loot - but I want to know if the objective is actually doable.

As Poland, in 1665, I am the master of eastern Europe & have a growing colonial presence in North America, but my dream is to be Emperor. I've been buying up relations with the rest of HRE with my huge & growing income. Can I really buy the job, or will the computer always hand it to my Hapsburg ally? Inquiring minds want to know... ;)
 
Playing a 1.08 GC as Austria I was elected Emperor in the first election. It hasn't gotten around to a second election yet, but it'll be an interesting one since I've annexed most of the HRE and most of the ones left don't like me much...
 
Spain 'in the HRE' - if they keep France-Comte or Luxembourg
they are still HRE. Even though they loose provinces to Holland.
 
Playing as Austria, it's now 1685 and I've only lost one HRE election, but that was early on. I do it by bribing (sending diplomatic gifts) all electorates so that I have the highest relations with them compared to other Catholic nations. It has worked like a charm so far.
