Summary

I am trying to recover saved city after I got a pop-up message with a failed save warning - Wondering if its mods or some other issue

Expected Result

When I got the pop-up window, I thought that the specific saved city would still appear on my "load game" list but instead it disappeared from there and I was unable to locate it. I was expecting for the game to still appear and if attempting to jump into that saved city, the game would then crash.

Actual Result

Following the pop-up window, the game crashed. I restarted the launcher and the game and after going into the game, I saw that my saved city did not appear. The older city I had was the only saved file on the game. I did have mods on both the old and new city, however, the old city always worked just fine. I have yet to figure out what exactly caused this. I am looking forward to recovering my city and returning to working on it as this occurred after spending so much time working on building up this city.

Steps to reproduce

The specific saved city file cannot be found on the load page. Before resorting to this method of assistance, I was speaking with Paradox Support Team on best steps to proceed in recovering my city. So I was able to locate the saved game and was able to move it to the same location of my older city that operates good, however, the file is not in the ".crp" format as mentioned by the support team, the older city saved file is and it works fine, but the save file for the new city I seek to recover is not in that format but as ".ccs". I was told to change its format but after doing so, I got a warning message that the change would make the file unusable. The file I am referencing is attached in this assistance request. Before doing this change, I did save two duplicate files to avoid potentially loosing the file due to this change. For further context, I am able to see the date stamp when hovering over the resume game button (7/21/25 - 4:55 PM) and the file is not lost as I have located it and moved it to the same location as my older city. After moving the file, it appears on the load page of the game, however, it appears in red font.

Platform

Steam

Game Version

PC - Steam - Paradox Launcher

Optional

Description

I can see the file is not lost and that it still appears on the "resume" button with its date stamp, after moving it to the new location, it reappeared but with red font. In terms of mods, I had not downloaded any additional or recent mods, the ones used in this specific city where the same ones used in my older city. The older city operates just fine. If mods where the case, It would be useful to know which specific ones could cause the issue as I could easily disable these. I do admit the specific map used is not original but I added it from the Steam Workshop. Keep in mind, I had been working on this specific city using this map and up to that point had no issue with it. I would appreciate assistance and guidance in recovering my city as I have put so much work and effort into it.

So is it safe to say that specific saved map is lost? Does it have anything to do that the map I used was added from the workshop? I was under the impression by Paradox Support that I could recover it.

I would hope what they said was there was a possibility only of recovering it! Not promising it was going to happen. In general uncorrupting any computer file is like unscrambling an egg!

The good folks over in the Modding forum here are probably your best hope, although traffic there is much lighter since CSL2.

If the older city operates just fine, then you may just only loose a short amount of time and just reconstruct where you left off.

As for mods, most mod issues are the fault of too many subscriptions, plus apps running in the background, and then finally running out of memory and the game crashed and unfortunately you lost your saved game. This is why I always recommend 32GB of RAM for this game. It is not necessary, but it help keep the crashes at bey.

just reload the previous saved game and continue on.

Your saved game ending in .crp will hopefully load. if not, the saved game ending with .ccs may be able to recover by renaming the ending of .crp

If this .ccs to .crp fails, then the saved game is likely corrupted and unrecoverable.

I doubt it was the workshop map causing the issue, but I find using the Resume button can cause issues. so always manually save your game after each important saved game. There is also a cloud save that you can use when saving your city. this can help with also manually saving the game, as it gives you a second chance to recover.

Also, never just subscribe to a workshop item and move on. You really need to thoroughly read each workshop subscription to make sure you meet all requirement, plus any issues the workshop item may have.

Also, read workshop discussions and comments to see what other users are having issues, if any.
