With windows 98, 64 MB RAM, 11Gig hard drive & Pentium 2,333MHZ I should at least be able to get a game going. Instead, it takes forever to load & is excruciatingly slow even with updated video card driver & a new patch.(Nothing is running in the background...)
Any ideas anyone? I would really love to play this game an I wonder whether there might be something else I could do.
The support line wasn't much help...

Defragment the hard drive, disable the music and run the game in the lowest resolution (800x600).

Also, 64mb RAM is the minimum configuration required. Memory is quite cheap nowadays, maybe you should think of upgrading to the 128mb RAM.

The game engine requires more memory than CPU power, i.e. a 1Ghz computer with 64 mb ram would be slower than a 300 with 128mb ram.

upcoming games will require even more memory than EU 2, so while you're at it, maybe you should upgrade to 256mb...

Personally, I run the game with a K6-2 300 and 128mb ram and I think it runs smooth, albeit slower than EU 1.

The latest patch should also be faster than the original game.

Thank you so much for your advice. One more thing, however: When I click on the Preferences to adjust the settings I get the error message saying "OLEAUT32.DLL is out of date. This program requires newer version."
How do I get around that so I can adjust game resolution & turn off sound?

This file is part of Windows. You might have to find it on the Windows CD.

However, before going there, go to Windows Update (In your start menu, there is a shortcut to it) and download all the patches that are in the first sections (critical updates and recommanded updates). I do not know if this file will be updated by these patches, but it's something worth trying.

Thank you all so much for wonderful advice!! I have added more RAM (now I have 128MB) and that seems to have solved all my troubles. 64MB minimum as specified by the manufacturer was clearly only enough to enable me to look at the game but not really play it.

Now if only someone came up with the "EU 1-2 For Dummies"...

Well, there is nothing like this for now ;) But take a look a the FAQ forum, or post a question in the EU II General discussions, people will answer your question in a timely manner. :)

If you need more technical help, don't hesitate to come back.
