Just a short note and mini-AAR. I tried CK two or three years ago and just did not like it. I tried it again. Just did not like it and did not get it. It seemed too slow and almost pointless to me. But I always kept thinking about it and sometimes reading the forums for updates. Then I saw a special for the CK-DV bundle on gamersgate and got it again recently and tried it again and for some reason it all clicked and I'm having a great time with it. I'm not sure why.
One thing I read below suggested starting at the Count of Uliad. I tried that and worked about three short practice games trying different things and in most cases having terrible problems and disasters and learning some things about the game and reading the FAQS and game hints in the game and reading some things on this forum.
Now I've started a game in earnest and am having a ball. Things are going well so far. I have a wife and young son in addition to a couple of other potential heirs who are also married and one with a son.
I vassalized myself to the Duchy of Leinster at the start and then went to war with the neighboring count after a couple of years. I won, got some money, saw that Leinster was still sieging his castle, and went to war again. I took a prestige hit but liberated the province and with that and the money from the first peace was able to make myself Duke of Ulster. Leinster is now my ally. And the third province in Ulster just made himself my vassal. I'm like 10 years into the game and have had a ball and seem to "get it" this time. My overall longterm goal is to be King of Ireland. I don't know why it is different this time, but it is.
I realize of course some disaster is probably lurking just around the corner, but that will be fun, too.
But I just thought I might offer this to those considering the game or on the edge or who have tried it and backed off. Sometimes you have to come back to it a couple of times to get it. But when the light bulb comes on, it is really neat.
