I have a little problem in my recent games... every single game , for 6 times in a row (well, a row being over 100 turns) the same system has been hit by meteors, and frankly, I am getting very aggravated. Why? Because I have 5 colonies in that system. And apparently there is no way my advanced space faring civilization can tell me BEFOREHAND which colony will get hit? 5 Times in 5 different places did these asteroid come in, randomly, without any way to ever defend against them.

So how do I deal with this?

Satellites

I deal with them by building a bunch of defensive satellites. Most planets with a full population to power the missiles and a good ring of defense sats make quick work of them. If i have a place built up, I even go so far as to not run the combat and just let it automatically settle, and then rebuild any infrastructure that got destroyed afterwards. Even low end drone satellites will do the trick.

What would you define as a "bunch" ;) 5 or 10 or 20 or 100 ? Otherwise that's a good idea.. I shall try it. Ehm.. what research do I need to get proper defense satellites anyway? Because drone sats seems like a pretty huge research undertaking and you may laugh, but I haven't got a clue what research specifically unlocks defense sats (the real ones)

There are 4 types of defence platforms;

Drone Platforms, which requires the Drone Platforms Tech (Rider techtree)
Torpedo Platforms, which require Torpedo Platforms, which comes off of Orbital Drydocks -> Deep Space Construction (Engineering techtree). You will also want a tracking torpedo, such as Fusion Torpedo.
Missile Platforms, which require Heavy Ship Missiles, which comes off of Heavy Planet Missiles (Missile/Warhead techtree). They also require Heavy Platforms, which comes off of Orbital Drydocks (Engineering techtree).
Battlerider Platforms, which require Deep Space Hangars, which comes off of Orbital Drydocks -> Deep Space Construction. They also require Battleriders (Rider techtree).

In addition, there are Scanner Satellites and Asteroid Monitors, both of which are also static system defences that have slightly different purposes.

Police Cutters and System Defence Boat are the mobile defence assets. Lastly, minelayers added to the Defence fleet can be used to pre-place Minefields in the Battle Manager.

I find that 4 Drone sats loaded with heavy drones placed as close to each planet is plenty to deal with meteor random events. With the heavy planet missiles that should deal with just about all the meteors leaving at worst minor infastructure damage should any get through. Sometimes I nestle a 6 or 8 ship lower tech fleet as close as can be but outward of the planets to help deal with slavers and meteor strikes.

Drone sats and missile ships set on spread fire.

As a rule of thumb, always build naval station in your multi planet system and personally I always research drone sats, you don't have to use heavy drones, in my experience normal ones with lasers do the work fine.

In mid game, when I'm rush colonizing a big system I park a dread fleet with tons of missile cruisers and spread them around the system.

Heya

I tend to use 3 Drone Sats per Colony plus a Police Cutter per Colony.

The former means that there is always something there to shoot, while the latter means thet I have some Mobile forces on hand.
( Cutters tend to congregate at the source of the disturbance which makes them handy )

The Mobile Forces are especially useful against Spectres ;)

An easier system is to reduce the chance of "Fun Events" from 100% to 20% while setting up the game. They spam FAR too often, especially considering how weird they are ("Von Neumman"? Who the heck is "Von Neumman" and why is he sending those bizarre diamond-droids to destroy my planets? !!?)

Heya

There are a number of different types of sat's, off various different disciplines.

So Torpedo Sat's are up the Torpedo discipline, Drone Sat's are up the Battle Rider discipline etc.

The quickest ones to get to are the Drone Sat's, which should be visible from the start of the game.

I had no success with the Torpedo or Droid satellites. Early game, they take a while to unlock, they are too weak and don't have a good range.

First, unlock Drone Satellite off the Drone tree. Then, get the first Torpedo skill off the Torpedo tree (the one on the right). Then, get the Torpedo Satellite off the Engineering Tree. Don't know if there's a pre-req for that one.

It was also suggested that unlocking the ~guided Torpedo skill off the Torpedo Tree (the next one after the previous skill you just got). I found that skill was really bad - "guided" torpedo is a bit of a euphemism.

The best thing to do is to lower the setting as I suggested above and out-grow the enemies. Eventually, you will get to a point where you're innately tougher than the weird enemy spawns.

I also forgot to mention that World Warhead is absolutely crucial to get early in the game. That is definitely a skill that helps in ALL defensive situations, and doesn't require any kind of upgrading on your part.

Not sure if you were being sarcastic or not... (I am guessing not, but you can always now claim you were as a back down route ;))

I would say a system with 5 planets deserves a big militar station and overpopulation of system defenses (the ammount depends on tastes, but 5-8 for each planet sounds fine). Defensive fleets aren't mobile enough so it's quite necessary to have a backup system to defend, delay, atrition enemy assets while the fleet moves to intercept.

Like 5 or 6

Like 5 or so defense Sats. The Meteors always come from certain angles, towards the outside of the system. Form the sats into a half circle, with one sat at the direction that a particular group of meteors comes from. They always come in the same patterns. Each Drone Sat will handle the Meteors from that direction and your planet missiles will take care of the rest. Hit Auto and your done.

Yeah so I settled with 3 very heavy missile platforms per planet with polaris missiles and some medium range energy weapons .. because more don't really fit anyway as well as a defense fleet packed full with heavy ship missiles and more energy weapons. A large military station is in the system but it has 0 combat value because I can't set what weapons it has.

The placement "collision" box is pretty wonky sometimes but yeah, on my new game I put the slider on 20% .. 100% seems insane. I still think that such events should be displayed on the pre-combat screen .. like, where they will happen. So far no random event has even gotten close to any of these planets. I am happy. On a mention though, I find that having platforms and defense fleet in each system is pretty expensive, but the AI doesn't seem to be doing the same thing so the game is absolutely hilariously easy.

I now think that terrans are really the worst race of them all though, that 5 planet system is on a odd node setup where I can't reach it without flying through 5 other systems. All barren by the way... I think my next game is gonna be Liir or Tarkas... they seem more fun.

Why THANK YOU! The Von Neumann machines make sense now. Things that don't make sense really bug the crap outa me.

Heya

One thing to note that may be impacting here is that each of the zones in the battle manager has a number in it.
That number reflects how many defence assets can be placed in that zone.

If you place more defence assets in that zone than allowed, the asset will be "bounced", which may thus look like a collision.

Someone please explain why when I go into combat my stations are inside a planet? So for example when my system gets attacked by Spectres they appear to go for the planet then attach to an empty area next to the planet, I'm assuming where the station should have been.
