I was just using Poland-Lithuania in a GC, and was trailing Spain by well over 100 VP's. So I get the bright idea to try and force two of my annoying neighbors (Golden Horde and its southern neighbor) into attacking me, since my relations with them were at -200, and they were each other's ally.

Long story short, I sent them numerous insult letters, I claimed each of their thrones, etc etc. They wouldn't attack me. So I get the bright idea to attack without the Casus Belli, (which caused me to lose 2 stability points) and I do ok until half the world declares war on me within a few months: Austria, Sweden, France, England, Turkey, and so on. The thing was that up until that point, I didn't engage in any war without the Casus Belli.

So what's a good way to either earn one, or tick off another nation to the point of attacking me? And how can I keep up with Spain?

Get banned from someone's COT. Not very likely with the Horde :D CBs are precious stuph, they don't just deal them out ;) Think twice before declaring war without one, esp in multi religious nations.

Easiest way to beat Spain is to win wars against it.

I would guess that you had some significant badboy rating. Even though you were declaring wars with CB, annexing territory on the offensive side of a war increases your BB.

Ya got me.

"I would guess that you had some significant badboy rating. Even though you were declaring wars with CB, annexing territory on the offensive side of a war increases your BB."

I failed to mention that I took 2 provinces from Turkey, 3 from Russia, and two independents were annexed.:D

I didn't think that my BB would be affected, because I did have a CB against Turkey, and I had the greatest luck- I received a temporary CB against Russia because they insulted a diplomat of mine (or something like that). So right before it expired, I went to war with them and did quite well, taking the three provinces, and their ally. The other province actually declared war on me, which was pretty funny considering that they had no ally.

But attacking the Golden Horde and the other country was a baaaaaaad idea. Nations began to pour into my country from all angles. It was a mess.

2 annexations of small nations... and you think you are not a bad boy? Everyone hates you and will kill you whenever they get the chance.

Even if you had a CB against Golden Horde, they'd still attack you as hard as possible.

"2 annexations of small nations... and you think you are not a bad boy? "

Well, one was an ally of Russia during our war, and the other declared war on me.

"Everyone hates you and will kill you whenever they get the chance."

Honestly, thanks for telling me that. I always thought that if I had a CB and went to war, my BB wouldn't increase. But now I know that's not the case.

I thought this because as Spain, I took provinces from France & Portugal. But my relations with the rest of the world were fine. Their diplomacy rating is unbelievably superior to Poland-Lithuania, though. I guess a lot in this game comes down to that rating, especially if you want to conquer.

And here's a dumb question: if I'm at war, and I have my slider for the treasury all the way up, will the morale for my troops suffer? IOW, would I do better with increased land technology funding?

No, morale is only affected by where you have the moral sliders, and of course combat and all that.

morale is affected by:

-when the unit got crated (it starts at breaking and overtime goes to stron or even very strong)
-navy orarmy maintenance slidders
-outcome of a battle (if you win or get routed)

I'm pretty sure that's it, but I might have missed one.

Three more (I think):

1) Sitting around in tropical climate provences.
2) Sitting around in enemy territory after a peace.
3) Sitting around out of supply.
