Railroad Tycoon
Such good memories from the first game.

Thank you for the insight on Workers & Resources. I might try it someday but I agree with you that looks far from GSG even if steam awards it this category.

Remember, Steam tags are user defined, and everyone has the opportunity to assign them or report those that they feel are wrongly assigned.
How can I report half of them?! It is painful to see clash of kings labeled grand strategy!!!

1. Open Steam page for a game.
2. Look for "Popular user-defined tags for this product:" in the lower right corner of the top box.
3. Click the + button to the right.
4. A popup window titled "Popular user-defined tags for this product:" should open.
5. Mouse over the tag you want to report, you should see a flag to the left of the + on the moused over tag.
6. Click the flag to report. You should get a popup thanking you for reporting, and the flag should turn red.

Good morning,

I haven't reported any wrong tag yet but this week numbers are down since last week (-1,40%) with both PDX (-2,65%) and other publishers (-0,74%) down.

All games seem to follow a regression to the mean with no big news. I assume this will be the tune for all the month of August. More competition may happen in September when a bunch of games like Frostpunk 2 and Ara: History Untold will be published.

Tier 4 remains stable as well with Age of Wonders 4 and Humankind going back to their long term mean:

This made me wonder, What is your system for getting this data? Are you doing an API call to steam and parsing the data? Or just doing it manually?
Because if I look at the GSG category on steamDB there are several games in there that are not on the charts implying some games are already filtered out, and if you are already filtering the data it should be easy to filter out games like W&R Soviet Republic and Manor lords that are IMO miscategorized.

I am filtering the data, only representing those games that are considered interesting for the comparison.

However, the overall numbers of 24h GSG peak players are not tampered with, they add all games in this category that steamDB has.

I only copy&paste the data from the website. I am no programmer (well, not since a brief period between 1999-2001)

Vic3 still shows no sign os stabilization, inching closer and closer to pre-SoI levels.

Kinda mind-blowing that of all their games, PDX had their biggest long term increase in player % from a patch where they basically just incorporated improvements/fixes from a mod. I don't know whether it's funny or depressing that corporate looked at the above numbers and still decided against putting some dev time into I:R.

Good evening,

Big decrease this week (-5,96%) with other publishers taking the hit (-8,21%) and PDX only decreasing a bit (-1,65%). This is not news as every first week of august has seen a decrease on 24h GSG Peak Players (see OP).

Tier 1 games has most of the decrease with CIV VI going down from the hights of previous weeks. The other games decrease a bit or stay stable, except for Norland that goes to Tier 4 from Tier 3 last week.

Surprisingly, almost all Tier 4 games increase their players from last week. Maybe players are giving a go to these alternatives from their main game during their summer holidays.

I'm wondering why couldn't Old World supplant Civ 5. It seems like such a solid game (although I haven't played it, but I haven't played any civs for a long time).
Civ 5 is probably carried by modded multiplayer, while Civ 6, Humankind etc by prettier singleplayer.
So is there something in Old World mechanics that people don't like for multiplayer, is it inertia of established base?..

My bet would be that most people who play civ don't want the extra complexity these civ likes add. Its just a comfort thing I guess, to play something that doesn't push back much, keeps you busy, but doesn't require too much conscious thought.

Games like humankind/old world try to create a better civ, with better AI and deeper mechanics. But a lot of people don't actually want that.
Obviously most people on these forums are probably not in that group, and are probably more interested in GSGs and when they see a civ like they probably assume its gonna be easy/shallow like civ, so they skip it.
This leaves these games pretty niche sadly.

What @Brumes Wolf wrote surely explains a part (and if true, than it is even much more of a concern for OW, as the AI is waaay superior to Hk's), not being as established (because of being a brand new franchise instead of a sequel), less marketing force and the first epic-only-phase might add the rest.

And I absolutely agree that it is very unfortunate that OW doesn't get the attention it deserves with all the qualities it offers :(

the first epic-only-phase
I forgot Old World was an epic exclusive, if there ever was a kiss of death for (smaller)games it is going the EGS exclusive route.
It seems any hype for a game tends to evaporate as soon as they announce EGS exclusivity, and by the time they release on steam everyone has already moved on and its basically impossible to get traction again.
I don't blame the first few who took the EGS bargain, but at this point I think its safe to assume any dev who signs an EGS exclusivity deal is choosing epic money over actually having a playerbase.

Back to OW/HK, TBGSG's are just a pretty niche genre, with one giant(civ) that hogs most of the attention, and even civ is not doing that great, given that VI only ever really equaled V in player numbers, while you would expect it to easily surpass it assuming number of steam users/gamers has grown significantly in the last decade (It also took VI like 2 years to even properly overtake its at that point 8 year old progenitor).

So to actually break through a game needs to be both really special and have a lot of marketing money behind it, and HK which IMO is a better game than civ V/VI (while having its own quirks) and also had a decent marketing campaign from a big publisher and an established studio behind it only sold around 1/12th of civ VI's copies as far as we know, so to really succeed you need to be really good, and really well marketed.

This is also IMO why Millenia, a very flawed/incomplete game from a new studio with little marketing behind it completely flopped.

PS.
With everyone being to positive about OW maybe I should give it another shot sometime, the demo thingy I played for a nextfest did not really inspire me.

I don't like that epic-exclusive-concept as well, but in case of OW the irony is that without it there would be no OW at all...according to the devs, it was initially the only chance to get enough funds to make it fly at all.

And yes, having a 2nd look can't hurt for OW un my book - it matured not only from early demos to release, but also since then. The game receives regular updates and cool stuff like e.g. Civ-style map tacks were added on that way :)

OW was one of the first wave EGS games, so outside of the funding thing, while it was obvious gamers hated it, it wasn't yet as obvious that it would also kill any future momentum, so less blame falls on them in that regard.
My statement is more related to developers who sign with EGS now, because its become pretty obvious that while you get a guaranteed amount of income from it (and probably funding during development) in the end only a fraction of the potential player base will ever see your game, and assuming developers like people playing their games, this seems like a pretty dumb move.

This week results for your information:

A small increase from last week (+1,37%) with PDX (+2,57%) and other publishers (+0,70%)

Tier 1 games follow the upward trend except for Warhammer III that is already in Tier 2. All the other games remain stable in that category.

Tier 4 games see more movement this week with Norland and Millenia increasing greatly their playerbase. Millenia has released its expansion this week. The other games decrease players except for I:R, Age of Wonders 3 and Star Trek: Infinite that remain stable and Humankind that increases some players this week.

New update, this week we have a small decrease (-2,11%) with PDX (-4,61%) and other publishers (-0,69%).

Tier 1 games sees an increase for CIV VI again thanks to the release of the gameplay video of its successor CIV VII while HOIV decreases a bit.

Tier 2 games sees Victoria 3 descending rapidly to Tier 3, while Stellaris less rapidly but also decreasing to Tier 3. Next week, I expect Manor Lords to increase its player base after the announced beta.

Tier 4 games see a decrease to all games except for Humankind that increases a bit and Old World and Age of Wonders III that remain stable. It is discouraging to see Millenia going down one week after the release of the last expansion. In the 4X civ alike games there is fierce competition between CIV franchise and the smaller Humankind/Old World/Millenia:

Studying the graphs, I find the fact that CK 3 has been staying more popular than EU 4 / Civ 5 for over a one and a half month now is very interesting.
Usually it only peaks above those two when an expansion is released. That's not the case now, suddenly in mid-July CK 3 got a bump in popularity for some reason.
This was so gradual that it was not even notable on the week to week reports, and it only stands out when looking at longer trends.

Thing about CK3 is that it has not that much from strategy game, and much Sims-like features, unlike it's predicesor who had equal mix of strategy and RPG (CK2).
