YEAH ! Find it!

Paradox launcher doesn't use it's own "libnode.so" (that is inside the launcher directory ), but the system one if it exists.

So if you have an update libnode.so ( that is from nodejs/npm installation ) the Steam launcher doesn't start !!!

I'm going to fill a bug report for this!

Kliwarrior did a good job finding a possible issue, however my logs show nothing about neither nodejs nor steamappid:

No cached sticky mapping in ActivateActionSet.

In fact, they seem to produce no relevant error whatsoever, even though steam is running with "-v".

The game does run when I launch it using binary executable (does not hook itself to Steam) and it even starts the launcher (when Steam is already running) using
Code:
~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/run.sh ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/ImperatorRome/launcher/Paradox\ Launcher -steam
so I recommend one of this two workarounds until developers fix default launching for Steam. Will be happy to give any information needed.

This is the kind of thing that I'm getting on the syslog. Apologies, I'm still learning to find my way around linux..

.

This looks like something wrong with Steam runtime libraries.
Indeed, that "gameoverlayrenderer.so" is there , on my computer, with
Code:
$ file .local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so
.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, BuildID[sha1]=658f6584cd84b5609c1c8b405dbe16ef4583a77b, not stripped
Take a look at the sha1, if yours is different from mine, you probably need to reinstall/update the steam package

PS. about Steam AppID, I discovered that a simple "export SteamAppId=859580" does the trick

That error is always present. It doesn't affect Steam

You are right, but that error message is unrelated. Launcher tries to run and crashes after it.

I have the same issue. To launch the game directly from Steam and have the Steam overlay and Steam features like achievements i just set the launch options in Steam:

Code:
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/ImperatorRome/binaries/imperator %command%

No launcher though, so dunno about mods.

Launching the binary manually isn't really working for me now. I can get in and play but my savegames now refuse to accept that I have the DLC I had last time. Imp:Rome hasn't updated at any point since 1st install and I haven't altered anything.

To launch the game manually, try once with steam running, then try and start the game manually. I think it still needs steam active.

I've played it a few times. Tried through Steam first with launcher crash. Then manually started the Imperator binary with Steam running. Steam shows my hour count going up but achievements not registering. However, trying to load my saves has it complaining that my DLC (the deluxe ones) are now not installed so I can't load them.

Still doesn't work for me through Steam only via the command line. Is this still an outstanding issue or am I the only one still having this issue on Linux? Has this bug been confirmed? Awfully quiet here about this problem.

I'm having exactly the same issue as OP on Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS 64-bit.

Try to launch game from steam, the launcher opens, click play and the launcher crashes or freezes then crashes no change from game version 1.0.0 to 1.0.1.

Not very experience with linux systems so I haven't been tinkering 'under the hood' to fire this sucker up. Still waiting to be able to paint the map red... sigh.

Ave Caesar!

Not how it was designed by Paradox but try the command line. Works for me, even though it's stupid that Paradox doesn't come with a fix.

SteamAppId=859580 /path-to-your-steam-folder/steamapps/common/ImperatorRome/launcher/Paradox\ Launcher -- -steam

Ubuntu should work just fine (19.04 here, but it shouldn't matter)
You say that the launcher starts, but the real game doesn't.
Can you try to manually start the launcher and report what it says before crashing ?

Code:
Start Steam , then open a terminal and:

~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/run.sh ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/ImperatorRome/launcher/Paradox\ Launcher -steam

I ran that command line in the terminal with steam open and was greeted with a 'general error' pop up same UI as the launcher saying steam initialisation failed with a retry button.

Terminal says.
Code:
sam@sam-NUC7i7BNH:~$ ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/run.sh ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/ImperatorRome/launcher/Paradox\ Launcher -steam

@Salacious Crumb
export SteamAppId=859580
before the command (sorry not to mention it)

No worries Kilwarrior.

So the launcher fires up as normal and after pressing play crashes, terminal reads as follows.
Code:
sam@sam-NUC7i7BNH:~$ export SteamAppId=859580
sam@sam-NUC7i7BNH:~$ ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/run.sh ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/ImperatorRome/launcher/Paradox\ Launcher -steam

The last line "info [ProcessService]..." appears after pressing play before crashing.

Ok, so it seems to me that the Launcher does its job, and the crash happens with the game itself.
You should find a "crashes" folder inside ~/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Imperator/
There you should fine one (or more) other directory with the name "Imperator_20190506_xxxxx " ( date and time of crash )
Take a look at the "exception.txt" , if it says something meaningful .

So I went to ~/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Imperator/ and there was no 'crashes' folder to be found?!
Manually started the launcher a few time but there is no crash reports or folder.
Just newsfeed folder, dlc_signature, game_data.json and pdx settings.txt
Performed a system search with no results and verified the game files through steam which said all is well.

Confusing to say the least.
