I'm in the middle of a game playing as Catuvellauni where I've managed to become a republic. When I noticed that my populist leader had a chance of becoming Archon I decided to just imprison them rather than risk it, at which point this happened:

I had no populist characters left in my nation so the game made some random character the "leader" of the populist faction. I have never seen this happen before, does anyone know how the game determines whom to choose for such occasions?

Every character has a value of conviction for every faction. You are shown only the main one: i.e: C. Ignotus has a Mil of 15, a Merch. of 17, a Civic of 20, a Relig. of 19 and a Pop. of 19. So he's shown with the green icon of civic people, and you can see Civic(20) in his profile. Whenever any of his other convictions gets a boost (events, ambition fulfilled or not, etc) he may change faction.
When the program finds no character to get the leadership of a faction (usually the populists, as we make the game go), it will search the character with the biggest conviction for that faction and make him switch ranks. I don´t know if the level of his other convictions plays a role or not (i.e if a character with a Mil. conviction over 500 would be eligible), and it seems that the charisma of candidates does play a role.

The populist faction were the Pest !
