Gotta question folks...

Playing IGC 1.09c (where the heck do you get the 1.20 I've seen mentioned on these boards? a side querry) as the Netherlands (very fun and challenging nation - for me anyway) when I recieved a message stating I had received a new leader named William of Orange (or something along those lines) to command my army. Also got the message stating I have a new monarch named William of Orange.

I assumed them to be the same person. However, do to my masterful manipulation of the military, William the Orange the leader was killed shortly after he took charge.

"Uh oh", thought I... now I have lost not only a pretty good army leader but also a pretty good monarch. - not so - William the Orange the monarch/king is still ruling the great Dutch nation long after his battlefield persona bit it.

What gives?

I've had the opposite happen, and I assume that's much more common because monarchs always die on Jan 1 ("Beware the Ides of March!"), while leaders' deaths are staggered throughout the year.

When Suleyman rose to the throne, I still had the zombified Selim I leading an army besieging Azerbadjan for eight months.

"Braaaaiiiiinnns! Brrrrraainnns!"

Cheers,
Paul Drye

They don't always die on 1st of January though.

But yes, there are a few anomalies between leaders/monarchs and when one of them dies prematurely, the other always happily keeps continuing his job :D

Haven't you seen El Cid? If the infidel are that frightened of him, just strap his corpse on horseback and send him on out. :D

Monarchs? That's got to be fairly rare, then. I've burned my way through fifty or so monarchs on various different games, and they've all died at the stroke of midnight on December 31st. Those kings throw wild New Year's parties, I guess.

Cheers,
Paul Drye

Both Gustav Adolph the Great and Karl XII dies on the correct date, so does all the other Swedish monarchs ( what I can tell at least ).
:D

Yes, it is a little disconcerting to get the message that your monarch (as military leader) died, but is still active as the head of state. Thos zombies on the thrones of Europe are a rather scary bunch. ;)

But you can look at it another way & it makes more sense. When the game says a monarch (military) dies, just think of it as his retirement as a military leader. The king no longer dons his armor & leads troops in battle - he elects to stay at home in the palace thinking up impossible missions instead, while planning to go insane at the most inconvenient time. ;)

I have noticed that certain monarchs in the game are coded to have different military & political deathdates. Some nations also have more than one military monarch at the same time - allowing the Crown Prince to prove his stuff on the battlefield, while his father shows that the old dog still has a few good tricks left. :)
