I can not recover from minimize. And crap keeps happening on my desktop I really cant afford to turn off. Is this As intended?

I wouldn't say it's intended, but it's not uncommon. It's probably fair to say that Paradox games tend to assume you are doing that and nothing else, and that the safest course is to save and exit the game rather than alt-tab out if you need to do something else. CK2 seems particularly susceptible to issues when minimised, even compared to say EU3.
