Like mid game could the Canaanites reform into Judaism, or some Christ/Mohammad like figure show up and bring monotheistic religion into the game? If not it would be a neat mechanic.

Yes, because for example al-asnam (? you know, that religion of arabic people), that is unreformed pagan religion, loose with sunni and shia too often (unreformed pagan -> low MA -> likely to turn into heresy - if we order ancient religions islam is recognized as al-asnam heresy). But I don't think that we can reform canaanite and roman beliefs. And modders: could you do sth with mercenaries? They don't change their religion.

It'd be interesting to play a Chalcedonian (or any Christian/Muslim) ruler in an ancient worlds game, fighting to restore the true faith in a world gone mad. You'd have to use the console obviously to force convert yourself.

It's weird I wish there was a "middle ground" option that would only convert "bastions" to the ancient religions. Like making Ireland and Wales go Celtic, lower Greek peninsula, crete, and maybe sicily go Hellenic, areas up and down the Nile but not the big empire title holder go Kemetic, etc. Give the religions a fighting chance but doesn't totally remove and overrun the Chalcedonian groups.
