Is this the same thing as "Quick-Strike Rules" then, just with a different name?

IIRC, alpha strike is a refined version of quick-strike. Quick-strike was originally a variant of battleforce that makes units separate into individual elements, while battleforce defaults to lance/star level units. Individual unit stats are the same. Battleforce has rules for chain of command and orders, but I’m not familiar enough with both games to say if there are other differences.

What would I choose? Total Warfare? Or Alpha Strike? Or that newish manual that just says "BattleTech."

And where would I find the board to play on? Everything I've looked at has no map or terrain except the Intro Box Set and thats sold out, while the new stuff doesn't come out until the end of the year

Hmm. maybe you missed it last time around ...

First, here's the info you need to find things and suss stuff out:

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Category:Boxed_Set

This will give you info on all the boxed sets.

The pertinent ISBN numbers are:

0979204739
for the 2007 box set,

978-1-934857-59-5
for the 2011 box set.

They originally retailed for 50$ US.

You can search on ebay for battletech box sets; they occasionally come up for something less than "I'm a greedy (redacted).'

That said, you can get most of what's in the box sets for free, LEGIT, ... from:

the main site: https://bg.battletech.com/downloads/
Namely, the quick start rules pdf, and the introductory record sheets.

You can get (older) maps from the PRI website: http://www.pryderockindustries.com/dl_boards.php#MAPS

You can get the universe guide from the box sets here: http://www.battletech.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/BattleTechUniverseGuide-1.pdf

Lastly: http://bg.battletech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/BattleTechPrimer_Final.pdf which will give you a roadmap of the larger realm of things.

You'll also need multiple six sided dice.

If you're looking for one rules book to get going past the quick start rules, I would recommend Total Warfare for the basic game (and perhaps combat manual, but I haven't read it yet).

For counters to use right away: http://www.pryderockindustries.com/dl_boards.php#CTR

For minis (cause who likes using counters all the time) : http://www.ironwindmetals.com/

"Boxed Sets
Release Date: 3rd Quarter 2018"

They can't come fast enough!

If you had money to burn, I'd say go with CBT(Classic Battletech), and Ral Partha miniatures. Nothing from Iron Wind. But then again, I'm the cranky old man who really hates the look of the IWM line of mechs.

Many of the IWM sculpts are identical to the Ral Partha ones. Obviously they created new ones for the Project Phoenix unseen and they have created new models for the many new mechs and vehicles since Ral Partha went out of business. They have also created a few new sculpts of some very popular minis, the MadCat and Atlas IIRC, but the original sculpts do remain available last I checked.

The only reason to spend big money on ebay for the old Ral Partha minis is to get the unseens or if you really want the lead minis vs. the pewter ones for ease of reposing. Note those really are mostly lead. While I handled them all throughout my youth with no ill effects you should be fully aware of that before you buy them.
