I apoligize in advance if this question has already been asked or if it is due to my own stupidity/computer illiteracy, but I am unable to get the IGC installed. After unzipping the file to Europa Universalis folder, I clicked on the patch.exe file, and even though I downloaded the java virtual machine as prescribed by the FAQ, I recieved messaged stating failure to initialize, or something like that(I'm not really sure, as the program goes down almost immediately). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Before you do anything else I suggest you download the latest version instead, currently IGC 2.1 (NOT 2.01).
There are many possible causes for failure. If you want to see what the error is, you should run patch.exe and IGCConfig.exe from inside a DOS prompt (then it won't go away when the execution halts.)
Make sure that:
1) You really unzipped the IGC into the correct folder!
2) There are no write-protected files in your EU folder and sub-folders.

2. How do I check & remedy any possible write protected files in the EU folders/subfolders. I have done nothing to the installed game, save the upgrades to 1.08 & 1.09.
3. I didn't see an older 'free' Winzip offered. Am I to understand that everyone playing the IGC has dutifully sent in an additional $29 to Winzip for the privelege?
I realize these are tedious, boring questions, probably not as interesting as the EU2 and siege warfare threads, but this inability to play the IGC is starting to hurt. Please help! My regards.

Okay, I have the IGC working now. (I think.) I have loaded things up just long enough to look at the 1492 state of affairs.
Oddly, I can open the IGCConfing.exe, but the patch.exe continues to blink, then close when I attempt to open it.
Question: What is the worst that can happen to my IGC games if I go ahead from here? I can find no nations named "unknown string" as the IGC readme warns about, so am I in the clear?

At least you'll know you've unzipped the IGC stuff into the correct folder--the 'unzipwizard' steps are crystal clear. Look for it by typing 'winzip' on dogpile.com or some other search engine.)

The patch screen is supposed to be open only for a few seconds and then close. If there are no unknown strings in ur game, it must have worked.
I couldn't get it working for me, and I'm pretty sure I have it in the right folder, but it doesn't really matter. I started a new campaign with the regular game and am having plenty of fun with that.
