Started a game tonight. As always I used the 1520.inc (Netherlands solved, Portugal and Turkish AI actually do their job, ...) and the Chaos settings. The plan was to play as Prussia till the Dutch showed up. As Prussia I had a small plot in the first 35 odd years to get a common border with Brandenburg and make it possible for them to for ocne join up. Which I succeeded in after taking over Pommerania. Then the revolt in the Netherlands paid of and after uniting the provinces of Flanders, Holland, Zeeland, Den Hague and Friesen I fought a 30 year war with Spain, then a 5 year intermezzo and we're still at it
Just real
I'm playing with several house rules like no expanding in Europe, no trading/stealing maps, no easy land claiming and so on and above all as always play historical. Right now I'm meddling in the Caribbean versus Spain till I get an explorer to find my way over to Indonesia.
But seeing my less than active part in Europe, lots could happen without me interfering (or not much
) and I was a prime subject.
Leading in VPs : Turkey. Granted I stole a few colonies from Spain in the Caribbean but mostly it is Turkey's ace performance that does it. They're all over East Europe. They have been very ok ever since I switched to the 1520.inc in which they start with the Mamelukes. They seem somehow unable to annex those from 1492 on. They're also vassalising their allies and making considerable gains against the Persians.
Spain is 2nd and is doing nicely otherwise. Still have the souther Netherlands and parts of Northern France. Colonised Mexico totally and has their usual possessions. For some reasons they are unable to keep their stability above 0. Seeing they're just about top of the tech race as it is, imagine what a good stability management could do! They also didn't get to the Philippines which often is the difference between a great and just a good Spain as if they get there a nice Chinese trade COT opens there.
France isn't doing anything special. Building some TPs in Canada and West Africa and losing bits of Northern France to Spain. Took them 50 years to take Calais. They seem to nicely survive the religious wars though.
But while the French were busy taking Calais, England suffering from horrible war tiredness decided the time was ripe to convert to reformed and DOW Scotland. It cost them Lancashire, Yorkshire and The Marches and they don't look like being able to put up a fight if the comes to a war with the Scots again.
Portugal is enjoying its good 1520 start. Cities already there in Goa and Malacca all they have to do is build some TPs around them and reap the awards from that Malacca COT. At least the AI is able to do that.
Russia once again is slow to get to Siberia and that is with the Time of Troubles still to hit them. Right now they're bordering on Sibir but managed to lose 2 provinces to them. They're allied again with Denmark and Sweden.
The Habsburgs were very active under Karl V. Bohemia was diplo annexed. The Emperor crown was secured time after time. The active bits were played in Poland were the Habsburgs managed to take over a lot of territory and even against the Turks progress was made under Karl V. However that progress vs the Turks was lost later on and core provinces were lost even.
Brandenburg meanwhile took advantage of my little ploy and has managed to diplo annex Prussia, annex Pommeren, take Memel and even managed to take Silesia from the up till then near invincible Habsburgs. Prussia at last!
Weird stuff happening with Poland! Not their usual badboy performance has been put in though they started well by taking Kurland but after that KArl V ran over them followed by the Turks. Poland lost vast tracts of land. Has no coast left (even after they annexed the Order, Denmark has Danzig), Austria is bordering on their capital and all of the south is now islamic lands. Though they did manage to vassalise Hungary but only cuz they are even more pounded up upon by the Turks.
But where the action really was : Italy. All those little states started out with settling huge scores with eachother. Genoa annexed the Papal States in the 1520s, soon followed by Modena annexing Milan. A real battlefield contrary to the HRE which was quite dull. France and Spain then moved into their alliances to hijack their movements.
Great game
