Playing Portugal in the GC, my ambitious Monarch insists on Conquering Andelusia, the Spanish center of trade, as early as 1500. This seems insane, given the relative strengths of the two countries. I've ignored it for ten years, at VP penalty, but it keeps coming up. I realize I may have the potential to change it through a game option mechanic, but strategically, is this a viable mission? Also, is there a page on this site with country-specific strategy discussions? Thanks.

If they're off u can't even select a mission if I'm not mistaken. Anyway u can also always make xure u have ur own mission going. Easy VPs that way as there are always a few very easy ones.

Exactly, if you choose your own then your monarch won't give you any. This is always advisable since there are some missions that are completely impossible, eg build a shipyard in the next five years when you won't have the tech level necessary for the next 100, or get a Royal Marriage with the Papal States which simply cannot be done.

There is no page with country-specific strategies as far as I know. The AARs may give you some guidance.

When it's set to off, the computer doesn't get any missions, and you aren't given any automatically, but can still choose them for yourself.

Gentlemen:

Another option would be to pick your own missions before your monarch gets a wild hair up his butt and asks you to conquer Andalusia (or vassalize Aden, as I had with Portugal). There are usually enough 'easy' missions to pick up VP's without being penalized.....
Then, of course, you could be like Baston in his Portuguese AAR and actually DO it....

Paul
