I haven't seen anyone else mention having this problem. I'm running Rome Gold 2.31 on XP, but the problem has been around at least since 2.2.

It started out this way: sometimes the sound effects would not play in the game. If I remember correctly I could get them to play if I quit and reloaded the game. Now, however, they never play. The music works fine, but the .wav files don't seem to work. For example, if I click on an army, I don't hear that marching feet sound.

Here's what's even more bizarre. I tried clicking on the .wav files in the sound folder, and they don't play even when the game isn't running. Note I don't have this problem with any other game or program, as far as I can tell.

I'm going to try reinstalling and see if that fixes it.

Your problem is nothing to do with Rome, but a Windows issue. Most likely codecs, try installing the k-lite codec pack.

Okay, you're going to love this. :D

So I installed the k-lite codec...and it works! I play Rome for a short session, then go away, and when I come back...it doesn't work again!

So I touched - just touched, mind you - the jack for my headphones, and the sound came on again.

At least I've never used my mouse as a foot pedal.

In my defense, though, the problem with the headphones is unusual because only some of the sounds disappear. I was still hearing the music, for example.
