When I first looked around the map I noticed some impassible mountains and I tought, great this will allow some nice strategic options but now I noticed that armies seem to be able to march trough them easily.
For example Koma and Shuwa provinces have a big montain all along the border and the tooltip says theres impassable mountain there but armies can still march trough there.
What is the role of impassable mountains then? They just give bigger terrian bonus/penalties? Or am I missing something?

Take them as an army taking shallow paths and passes in the mountains.

If I remember correctly there's no single province that has solely "impassable mountains". It'll be a percentage of the rest of the total mountain score.

Ex - It may have plains - 28%, farmland - 12%, mountains 20%, impassable mountains, 40%. So just because it has impassable mountains doesn't mean there aren't mountain passes through them that are traversable, they just take a really, really long time to maneuver an army through.

If you mod a province to have 100% impassable mountains, are they really impassable?

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? :p

if the answer to a question is non-existent or irrelevant is it worth asking? :p

P.S: If you moded to 100% Mountain it probably would simply take a really long time to move through the province and you'd always get the max def bonus (I suspect)

Too true. I'll try to be more constructive in the future.

I guess the only way to find out is to mod it. It doesn't seem too realistic, though, unless the province is comprised entirely of mountains...

Well, there were mountains where there were really only one or two passes and even those were impassable through much of the year. But armies move so slowly in the game that I don't think there'd be any practical way to represent that.

How is my question irrelevant? If the mountains really is impassable at 100% it does open up some interesting modding opportunities.

I really doubt they would be impassable though. Why would they code in a feature they aren't going to use?

I have maps showing all of the contemporary major roads. I'll try making all other borders impassable, though whether it will be an interesting strategic element or just a pain remains to be seen.
