It is pretty dead to me.
I played the greek world to death, I was hopeful for the rest of it to get the same attention.

You must try, it is the best game of the paradox, where the mechanics of the game best fit with the period portrayed. Imperator Rome was going the same way.

It's pretty "dead" to me. 2.0 was all fun and all but it wasn't magic that suddenly made the game endlessly compelling.
I still like the game and think it has pretty sweet potential but frankly I feel like it needs like 1 more year of serious content and even then I wonder if it'd compete that well with the big boys.
Funnily enough it feels like what did Imperator in wasn't its failure (though if Imperator was a bigger smash hit obviously it might've changed things) but rather the failure and needs of the other teams. With EU4's horrible Leviathan release, CK3 thirsting for serious content and the unannounced game which we have no idea how much they are struggling with or not.
Would be really nice if PDX could return to Imperator after getting their shit together but I guess we'll see!

To be honest, I think 2.0 is what saved us from "I:R is cancelled" news, which might be what they were preparing to say before 2.0 proved to be such a success (and I couldn't fault them, from perspective of CEOs and investors I:R was a massive flop). PDS were always pretty clear when they cancelled games for good (MotE, Sengoku, EvW, and numerous third-party games) so I do believe when they say that they want to continue the development. Still sad to hear there won't be any updates in 2021 though.

I still play CK2 over CK3, Vic2, and HOI3 (from time to time). Imperator is still available to play, just like it was yesterday and will be tomorrow.

I:R isn't dead per se. They did 2.0. Frankly the changes look great but I:R I might have played IR too much already.
IMO 1.3 or so wasn't a failure. It had the feel of the original game (EU Rome) with more stuff. It just wasn't finished.
TBH I think the original game was better in every way. It did much more with much less. I think by dealing with the Greek world they lost sight of Rome.
