Of course, in since we can't play the merchant republics, maybe they'll make it so that you could get them to finance a crusade in return for trading privelges. Historical examples would be the Venicians in the fourth crusade and the Pisans and Genoese in the first crusade.

As I understand it that will be up to the "player", be it a human player or the AI.

AFAIK there won't be any scripted events for historic crusades. They will have to come when the circumstances allow for it, not set by date.

Which is a real great idea. That way there is no waiting for this or that event to happen before you do (or don't do) something. After playing the game for a while I am sure you will get a feeling for when things will happen. But it is nice to not know exactly when an event such as a crusade will come about - part of the mystery of the game.:)
