Trying to determine if I should take the plunge on this one. I like the concept, although I could do without all the magic and creatures:) I am well aware of the stated system performance issues so minus that issue, are there any impressions about the gameplay itself? Is it much better than the first version? Is it fun? Any serious gameplay issues being seen? Lastly, do you recommend a purchase?

Thanks!

Understood...just thought with the prologue released there may be some basic opinions. If they were good enough I could pre-orde, get a 10% discount, and have some time before the game was fully released:) But if gameplay isn't that great, then I know to stay away:)

Disagree. I think the battles are VASTLY improved... some points that I found good
a) much better camera, in KA1 they were absymal now they are just perfect (and ver customizable even)
b) graphics are better (take that with a grain of salt, many people including me have to play on low because of performance issues)
c) more balanced magic system with a magic shield system, less insta-wipeout spells
d) I may be wrong, but if I recall well KA1 didn't have these skills every 5 levels that generic troops now have in KA2 (eg "50 % more resistance against ranged") - gives a bit more variety for your troops
e) HUGE: the stupid capture points to win system from KA1 is gone, now capturing points gives advantages, big ones so fighting for it is still worth it - much better!

Yeah.. may be that some individual things were a bit better in KA1 but overall - BIG improvement!

Apart from the performance issues one of my top games this year and yes I can say that in January and without it even out!

I guess it's really mostly personal preferences, though. For me, KA1 already hit the sweet spot because it had not only the connection TBS-RTS but also RPG components with quests - can a genre combo get any cooler? (if your answer is yes, then you should think twice before buying). I just thought everywhere "damn, this could be so much better...". Impression from KA2 Prologue: it is.

The biggest disappointment and step back for me would be the kingdom management aspect.... or rather lack there of. They seemed to have scraped this portion of the game. I was holding out hope that the final game would still have an economic factor but I think I have mislead my self in such hopes. I would also throw in the unit upgrade system as well, the first unit upgrade system had trade offs and thus was superior. KA II simply has: level 1,2,3.... Problem is I believe that the enemies will scale with you in the main campaign so the only real difference will be in the slight cosmetic changes to the units themselves.

In all other categories I believe this game a great step forward from the first. Just wish they did not take any steps back.

Same here. I also expected that they would continue and improve the sandbox gameplay from the Saxon/Druids DLCs. But at least in the prologue campaign everything seems to be linear. No economy, no random quests, no independent computerplayers. You just run from one quest to the next. While the quest system is nice, reducing the game to solving one quest after the other is a step back imho. Freeplay is what makes the TW series so successful.

I didn't actually feel the Prologue was especially linear. You do have to take over the whole map - you don't have to do it in a particular way (as far as I remember). Isn't there a lot of choice about which Roman factions you support, and how you behave to the non-Roman groups? And that governs whether they join you or fight you?

Yeah, it's not really that linear. Mostly it's just a small map. I'm actually rather impatient because of it. Hopefully the main campaign is as good as the prologue leads me to believe.

But the main campaign should definitely have more freedom.

According to ther manual kingdom management was reduced to what you see in the prologue. I guess I had wrong expectations about this game. I was hoping that they developed it into a real strategy game with a quest system as an extra, but it's more like a roleplaying game which is only paced by player actions with a mandatory mainquest and optional sidequests.

I take it you have not played KA1?
