After reading through another thread about how unpopular characters shouldn't yield any Tyranny penalties when imprisoned again, I realised that there is a solution to it :D

Download Link

What the mod does:
When you imprison an extremely unpopular character (< 20 popularity), you don't suffer the +2 Tyranny penalty that you normally would. So, if you have a character you really don't like, feel free to smear their reputation until you can imprison them ;)

Currently, the mod does not counteract the effects of banishment or execution, though that can probably be added through an event sequence at a later date.

How to install:
  • Install EU:Rome and the VV2.1 as normal.
  • Unzip the file "unpopularity_v1.zip" to your mod subfolder.
  • Run Rome.exe and select "Unpopularity v1" from the mod drop-down menu.

Screenshots:
1. Let's meet our guinea pig for today's experiment, C. Antonius Hybrida. Say hi, Gaius!

2. Gaius gets imprisoned. Note that our Tyranny has risen--don't worry, that is normal, kids.

3. One day later--and where has the Tyranny gone? It's magic! Don't you smile, Gaius, you're in prison.

Now the world can celebrate. Future additions may include (laziness pending):
  • A series of events that will fire once a character is imprisoned, representing his trial.
  • Other cool stuff, I guess. I'll think about it later.

Enjoy!

But unfortunately it sort of unbalances the game in that now you can simply lock up unpopular rich people, kill them or exile them and gain 100 gold any time you want. At only a total cost of 2 tyranny (for the exile). pretty cheap price for the $$ gained.

I liked the idea but it needs something more to balance it on the other end... I think.

I think that the best answer to that issue would be to tell the AI to imprison unpopular and disloyal people more often - so that they also get the money. A sneaky method used by both sides is equalised, after all...

You'd have to use events to get that sort of effect.

Also, I'm working on a new method of tackling this. In short, it's going to be a 'title' that you can give to people who you don't like to charge them for bribery, corruption, treason, etc. What follows will be a series of events that represent the character's trial and eventual imprisonment and/or banishment (imprisonment and exile by events don't give Tyranny penalties) based on how popular and/or wealthy they are (popular and wealthy characters will be more likely to get out of such a predicament).

But, what we have will do for the time being.

Wee, finally something to show of these past couple of hours' effort...

As mentioned previously, this method of imprisonment and exile revolves around titles (odd how almost all of my mods involve titles...). To start, you must find the character you want to imprison and start making up some random rubbish about how this person stole a chicken or something. I chose Appius here because I didn't like his face.

It's a little known fact that there were, indeed, legal proceedings for ugly people.

Sadly, it appears that Appius the Ugly is either too rich, too popular, or too lucky and he manages to get an advantage in his trial.

...And he manages to beat my lawyers. (Edit: oops, managed to forget to change the text...copy/paste, my old nemesis!)

And here is the alternative event path:

All up, each trial takes about two months, give or take a few days. I still have a bunch of things to tweak and test, but it's basically ready to go after I pretty it up a bit more.

Enjoy :)

Aah this is what I've always wanted to do to my ugly characters. Good work! Using exile instead of imprisonment makes this option a lot more balanced.
And btw, it's an honour to see you're using my mod ("banished to Etruria") ;)

NICE! You rock, man! Can't wait to get my hands on this. That is PERFECT!!!!!!! Now can the miracle occur that the AI can initiate this appropriately?
That would properly require an AI-only event giving the title to appropriate candidates, but it could be done.

As a matter of fact, I use the Mod Collection as a testbed for most of my little changes :p It's a great mod, almost everything I do I try to balance with it in mind.

Looks great.
Hehe... :p must rock to unleash upon Populist scum.
Interestingly, I have something in mind to make it harder to prosecute populist characters--basically, since the people will not be happy that their political mouthpiece is being silenced, you can expect some riots and general unhappiness when making up some bogus charges against populist characters. It had to be balanced somehow :p

I wouldn't call this kind of hack "perfect" but thanks in any case. As Sute]{h mentioned, the AI would have no idea how to deal with this sort of thing, so I might make it an event-only thing in the future at some point.
