Improved Country Names Mod

I'd like to announce and release my first mod for HOI2, the Improved Country Names Mod. What it does basically is change the names of some countries to better reflect the WWII era and the ahistorical possibilities of the game.

For example, United Kingdom has been renamed to Great Britain. This because Great Britain is more neutral when players go ahistorical (communism and the monarchy don't go hand in hand). Another reason is that while it's officially called the UK, in most writings and speeches of the time period the country was called Great Britain or Britain.

It's available in all the HOI2 languages. If a translation was not done correctly please notify me and I'll change it.

While the mod may not be the best or most useful I enjoyed making and using it so I thought I'd release it.

And now for a list of the country names that I changed and my motivation:

People's Republic of Korea renamed to North Korea:
Indicates it's a communist republic. Still Nationalist China or the USA could capture and release North Korea. This is more neutral. And the use of the term North Korea is much more widespread.

Korea to South Korea:
More neutral and more widespread.

United Kingdom to Great Britain
Explained in the example above. More neutral.

USA to United States
Abbreviations suck.

Byelorussia to Belorussia
Belorussia was the name used in Imperial Russia and as far as I can tell in the WWII period too. It was also the name in most foreign languages as well.

Arab Federation to Arab League
Arab Federation is another combination of states. The flag is from the Arab League and the area it encompasses also corresponds with the Arab League.

Benin-Sahel to Dahomey
Don't know where they got the name but the country of Benin was called Dahomey at the time of decolonization.

Sinkiang to Sinkiang Clique
Just like the other warlords, Clique indicates it's not a real country only a band of warlords. Sinkiang remains as it's the term used in that time instead of the now common Xinjiang.

Shanxi to Shanxi Clique
Just like the other warlords, Clique indicates it's not a real country only a band of warlords.

Xibei San Ma to Ma Clique
Just like the other warlords, Clique indicates it's not a real country only a band of warlords. While Xibei San Ma was used, Ma Clique indicates that it is similar to the other Cliques.

Yunnan to Yunnan Clique
Just like the other warlords, Clique indicates it's not a real country only a band of warlords.

DDR to East Germany
More neutral.

FRG to West Germany
More neutral.

East African Union to Tanganyika
They made the EAU because they didn't make provinces to hold Burundi and such countries. Tanganyika was what is now Tanzania.

Euskadi to Basque Country
Euskadi is Basque. We don't call Netherlands, Nederland so why do it here. Basque Country is the term used by most foreigners.

Union of Mali to Mali
More neutral.

Mengkukuo to Mengjiang
Outside of Wikipedia and HOI2 related sites no-one uses the name Mengkukuo. Mengjiang is much more known.

I dont agree with the first three names...What if one of the Koreas annexes the other one?DPRK is meant to be released by communists,and KOR by democrats and fascists...And remember that UK includes North Ireland...

Estados Unidos Mexicanos = United Mexican States this commonly known as Mexico. You will not offend Mexicans? USA commonly referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, or America. And yes the official name of Great Britain The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
I russian and at us the Netherlands officially names the Netherlands, no officially Holland.

Uh, no. The Koreas and the Germanys should stay as is. Because in many of my games, there is only one korea, and it is either democratic or soviet-style communist. So how would it make any sense to call a full Korea, North or South Korea? Same with German puppets.

It's a personal mod so I guessed I'd upset a few people at least with my choices. At least it was good practice. It's not a serious mod and quite geared to my own preferences but if I can make at least someone happy it was worth uploading.

Didn't know that the Koreas and the Germanies when released on its own make up the entire peninsula/former Germany. In that case a geographical denominator wouldn't make sense.

Don't understand what you're getting at bramms. Mexico?

The UK example makes no sense. Most people just say the UK. Like they say the US so UK is more widespread. And plus its completely incorrect to call it Great Britain and ignore Northern Ireland. Its like calling the entire USSR, Russia.

And again the problem with the names is the name changes depending on the political orientation WHEN RELEASED or coups. And I don't see how calling it North or South or East or West makes it more "neutral". Maybe politically but one can make a counter argument to that easily.

False-ish. You have to be communist to release the DPRK in-game.

Same with West/East Germany.

And use Tanzania instead of Tanganyika. Zanzibar isn't it's own province in-game.

Byelorussia to Belorussia

Oh no. It's just the different transcriptions of Russian language: could be Byelorussia, Byelorussiya, Belorussiya, Belorussia and so on... However the only official language of the first Belarusian (!) country, which appeared in 1918, was Belarusian. That's why in my opinion we should use 'Belarus', or 'Byelarus' - 'Belarus' is suggested by their state, so...

I also dislike the idea of North and South Korea - it could have sense in Modern Day Scenario, though.

As long as I know, PRK is (and always was) the (crazy) left of Korea and Korea Republic always was the demorcratic buddy of U.S.A. in Asia. I agree with the Great Britain stuff cuase it is more neutral for a future coup. If Oswald Mosley takes power, and kick king ass to canada, the name of the nation should change... But I guess it would be annother nation (with other tag and other flag) after that.
Also, how the hell can bouth germanys be neutral? It is Cold War for them! Neutrality is for cowards and Switzelanders!
Oh, and about U.S.A. stuff... Well, a lot of coutries use United States. Brazil itself was Estados Unidos do Brazil (U.S. of Brazil) in the '20s, but we changed after Vargas to República Ferderativa do Brasil (Federative Republic of Brazil). In fact, the name of U.S.A. is kind of strange cause just them are part of U.S.A., not all americans (people from america). In fact, we (brazilians) are now stoping saying American to people born there and start saying Estadounidense (Unitedstatian?). Whatever, that is your choose for names, so...I don't agree with you but I can never make you stop saying it.

IMO it's stupid to change korean and german names.

If you conquer west germany with east germany (or other way), it's looks very stupid in the map when there is no west germany, but there is eastern one. same with north and south korea.
