I am playing Spain in GC, but my income is simply not increasing, except for trade due to colonization of Americas. My infrastructure level is too low to build anything but refineries. Anybody knows how to increase your tax and production incomes? Are the province tax incomes proportional to population? Also, the "mouse overs" are telling me that the demand for tobacco & sugar will increase with building breweries. How do I do that?

Thanks everybody

First, lots of people think that Spain is one of the easiest GC states to play. Please check out Huszic's FAQ. How to increase census tax and provincial income (the income you get on January 1): increase population, increase infrastructure levels, increase stability, increase the demand for the items produced there, build tax collectors and other province improvements, increase number of provinces owned (via colonization or conquest). All of the above grow only slowly, which is completely realistic. The quick money is in tradeposts and gold mines, which as Spain you should be able to have in plentitude for a good long time. BTW, trade income is income too, you just get it every month instead of every year (which means most of it is invested in research).

Refineries = breweries. Build in province with sugar or wine for max money benefit [didn't know about the tobacco, probably a glitch?]

Did I mention reading Huszic's FAQ?

language problems.

refineries are breweries. The game doesn't translate over consistently. likewise barracks are conscription centers and goveners are called something else too. It was confusing to me at first too! And they will increase your income by 12 if you place them in provinces that have sugar or wine. anywhere else they increase it by 6.
