Ok, sorry if this questions has been posted before, but I did do a quick search and didn't find anything.

Recently, I regained an interest in playing HOI. I've gone without for a few months, but I suddenly got the urge to make a worldwide Communist hegimony. Unfortunatly, when I tried to start up the game, it got as far as Initializing Globals (or loading, whatever) and froze. Now, I know it normally takes a fairly long time for that to load, so I go away, play a bit of Playstation, do some math, have lunch, and come back a few hours later. It's still loading. I try to force quit it, or at least alt-tab out to make sure there isn't something running in the background screwing it up. It has completely frozen my computer. I do a hard shut down, restart, uninstall HoI, reinstall it, download the 1.06 patch and install that. I try to start it up again, and it fails the same way. HoI has fun just fine for me before. I've even been able to finish a game as the Soviets before the time limit (barely, stupid Bolivia), so this is a fairly recent problem.

I have recently installed "Spybot Search&Destroy" and Norten Anti-Virus 2004. One of these might be interfering.

Can anyone help me?

Ok, I think I figured out the problem, after I kept this window open to try and alt-tab to. I did uninstall the Spybot thing, disabled Norten, and ctrl-alt-deleted all the various background apps. The Battleship, Destroyer and Sub icons for the USA disappeared at some point. Now, I can just push "ignore" on the 3 error messages that are displayed, and get to the game but it kinda bugs me that I don't get very many ships as the US now. Do you know of any location I can download some ship sprites from so I can watch my little navy putter around?

Ok. What are the exact messages of the errors. These might be tweakable, so that the game with load for you.

The problem with the sprites is known, and happens when you ctrl-alt delete. Dont do this. Try Alt-tab next time, to see if you can navigate and bring up those err-msgs to the front of the screen.

Ok the error messages are

#1. "-- Palette 'gfx\palette\T-BATTLESHIP C-USA L-1.bmp' not found! -- Do you still want to continue?"

#2. "-- Palette 'gfx\palette\T-DESTROYER C-USA L-1.bmp' not found! -- Do you still want to continue?"

#3. "-- Palette 'gfx\palette\T-SUBMARINE C-USA L-1.bmp' not found! -- Do you still want to continue?"

Each of them comes with 3 buttons labeled Abort, Retry and Ignore. I have found that doing ignore lets me start it, but it crashes fairly soon after launching a game, so I think I need to find a way to either replace the files, or make the game ignore the need for them.

Okay let's try some standard things first.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

Ok, AVI folder renamed, color set to 16 bit, and everything in the background other than Systray, Explorer, this window, and something named Winmgmt (that one, if I try to kill it off it comes back, so short of hunting it down and uninstalling it, I can't quit it). The 3 Palette files still don't load, but the game has been significantly stabilized. On my previous try, I couldn't even finish my research assignments before HoI CTDed. I was just able to finish a year as Germany, so it is improved.

Do you have any mods installed?, what patch are you using?

Look at the self help sticky thread and follow the instructions in Post #1, especially point 1. Uninstall, notice that this is a hot link to detailed instructions.

Those files doent exist in any of my 106 or 106b installations. Furthermore, its not part of the 106b zipfile. Therefore, Im thinking its a mod.

Leave the AVI folder renamed. so the game loads up quicker.

Suggest taht you follow Castellons advice, uninstall and reinstall only Vanilla Hoi, up to 106. Then try putting back to 32-bit color and seeing if that works on its own.

This means that you have 3 .spr files (in the gfx\map\units folder) which contains a line 'palette =', and is referencing one of the 3 files you listed above.

Find them (for example by using the search ... function from the explorer), and replace the named .bmp file with a filename that actually exists in the gfx\palette folder.

And Castellon is right. This problem was probably created by installing a sprite mod.

No not really, leave it at 16BIT, it is more stable.

Ok, I ran the uninstall, chose custom uninstall, and took out everything that vaugely resembled HoI, even the folder it was in. I reinstalled and patched up to 1.06, and now it works fine. I haven't played it enough yet to see if it's stable, but it finally loaded. Thanks a bunch 2Coats, Castellon.
