I have one question that has been really niggling away and doesn't seem to have been discussed. Probably has a lot to do with having so many personal hours spent in 4X styled games.

What is it, that you as developers, see as the most innovative aspect of this game and why focus on that?

Great question

I'm looking forward to an Official Answer but I dare say they would say the emphasis on CKII style characters and interactions and the emergent storytelling.

Possibly, with the announcement of Master of Orion and Endless Space 2, I have some pretty big worries about whether any of them will actually stand out. Personally I dislike the card style of Endless Space and especially Star Ruler 2. Stardrive had some really good things in it, but they seem to have been ditched in Stardrive 2.

Most of the current generation of 4X games unfortunately have the appearance of being rushed out the door to recover costs and then just left to die. The fact that this game has reached announcement stage after changes internally, gives me hope that it will be a good game. But whether it is what I'd prefer in a 4X game, isn't always the same as what the developers want.

In a market that was once starved for variety and depth, it is becoming quite flooded with poorly designed and thought out mechanics. One can hope that the upcoming releases will turn things around.

Agreed, I actually booted up Endless Space again just because this game has really got my Space Empire itch going and while I still enjoy the game I just feel it is so hindered by an overall lack of depth. Somehow the card system seems even less interesting than throwing army blobs against one another in CK2. At least then the unit makeup and character traits has some impact on which tactics will be used.

I think emergent story telling, scale, and the technology system. Oh and pops, and character trains, ethnicity so forth.
