I realise that Merchant republics like Venice, Pisa, Genoa, Novgorod etc won't be controlled by the player in the game, but I think there is scope for some great interactions with players and AI Crusader kings. I'm sure you know how the French of the 4th Crusade agreed to pay Venice a fixed sum in arrange for passage to Egypt and the provision of 50 galleys. However, only 1/3 of the estimated army turned up, so the Venetians got nasty on the debt and made them attack Zara and Constantinople.

Paying the merchant republics would be a great way for landlocked nations to grab a piece of the holy land. Sure we can transport your troops to the holy land... we just need half your kingdom as collateral. Make sure you get some loot...

Yea, I hope this would be included in some way or the other.

So you have always the choices between loosing half of your soldiers on the land route by desertions, and paying those Venetians and Genuese obese amounts of money that you never could repay :D
