I was reading mandead's thread on possible scenarios, and the problems with extending the AGCEEP's start date backwards to the 14th century, when I had an idea: The AGCEEP: Medieval Edition.
I know there have been medieval mods in the past, most notably the now defunct Mongol Empire Scenario. While some of these mods have been quite highly developed, they've fallen into disuse due to, I suppose, a lack of the kind of organisation that characterises the AGCEEP project. What I propose is an amalgamation of the best medieval mods from a time period of, let's say, 1100 onwards (hopefully with full permission from the authors), to build a framework of events and settings upon which to build a fully fleshed out mod in its own right.
Some questions of importance:
1. Would a new map be required, or should we go with the vanilla map? If a new map is required, would it be the new AGCEEP one (still coming, I presume?) or one built specifically for a medieval time period?
2. What time period should this cover? I suggest a late medieval/early renaissance period, as the further back one goes, the bigger problems one encounters with questions of tech and whatnot. My suggestion would be that the mod could cover 1119-1419, a nice 300 year period starting in the crusades, moving through the Mongol conquests, and finally ending around the time of Agincourt.
3. Who would contribute? I would hope that the contributors of AGCEEP might be interested in fleshing out the "backstory" of their mod, as well as those modders who worked on the other medieval mods we have floating around. I would certainly love to sink my teeth into late medieval England.
So, any thoughts or suggestions? I feel a lot of the content for this project, if it were to go ahead, would be drawn from the Mongol Empire Scenario, as it's the best medieval period mod I've seen so far, so I suppose the first step would be getting the team that created it on board, or at least have their permission to use their material. The second step would be gaining the permission of the modders involved in any other mods we might want to incorporate, and then amalgamating them into a working framework. Step 3 would be to assemble a team of modders to work on it, and step 4, a working beta hopefully
Please post feedback.
