Hello !
I'm an History student and i worked for my master on the roman institution called the Interregnum.
The interregnum was an institution dated from Romulus' death. At that time, the patres, the senators, took the auspicia and the power of the King, and decided to name one of them Interrex. This interrex was chosen among the senate, and his goal was to find a new king, Numa for example was chosen by an interrex. So, after every king's death, except the Tarquinii, an interregnum took place and interreges were chosen among the senate to elect a new king. The task of an interrex lasted 5 days long, it was very short, so most of the time he didn't had time to elect a new king and had to name an another interrex.
This tradition was kept during the Roman Republic : after the escape of Tarquinius Superbus, an interregnum took place, an interrex was called and Iunius Brutus, the first consul of Rome, was nominated by an interrex, Lucretius Tricipitinus, father of Lucretia.
During all the republic, only the patrician senator could be chosen as interrex and could elect an interrex : they considerated that they were the true sucessor of the first senators. So, only the patres, the patricians senators, could be interreges. The procedure was pretty much the same to the Monarchy time: if both consuls were dead, or missing at Rome at the time of election, the Senate took back the power ("auspicia ad patres redeunt" says Tite-Live) and called an interregnum. The interrex had 5 days to hold elections, if he couldnt make it, he named an another interrex among the patricians senators, which had to hold the election, etc.
When I studied this institution, I took notice that, sometimes, the Interreges made arrangements with the patricians to promote patricians during the elections. At the end of the republic, when Crassus and Pompeius were elected consul in 55 B.C, it was during an interregnum arranged by the triumvirate. Same with Sylla : he was proclaimed dictator by an interrex to legitimize himself, but he wrote a letter to the senate to promote himself.
So I thought that the interrex could had an interresting mechanic in game : indeed, if both consul are dead in a battle, or sick during election time, an interregnum event could fire.
A random senator could be chosen as interrex (there is, for now, no patrician/plebian in game) and you could choose 2 candidates to promote for the consulate in exchange of some political power, or you could also let the people completely free to decide, giving some popularity to the senator and political power to Rome.
If you choose to promote candidate, an event chain could fire were other candidates could be upset. For example, in 55, an another candidate protested because Crassus and Pompeius were clearly prefered by the interrex. So you could intimidate them/ pay them/ make a speech to manage this threat.
The Interregnum lasted 5 days, but this could be difficult to recreate this timeline in game, so why not extending the mandate to one month ?
Please let me know if you have understood my idea, and if you find it interesting.
Have a great day !
