After downloading the mod I decided to mess around a bit with the files and modify them a bit. After doing so and turning on the game I was informed my checksum was invalid. So I tried it again without touching any files and it was fine. Does invalid checksum mean I messed up some files or is it invalid just because I made some tweaks but otherwise it's running fine? Thanks

Basically it means it doesn't recognize the files. Using any mod, including submods will also get an invalid checksum, unless they specifically make it have the same checksum as CK2+.

you can't "make the same checksum".
Submods that don't want to trigger the checksum warning have to add supported_checksums = { <checksumwithoutindia> <checksumwithindia> } to their mod files with their own checksums. This ofc only works if you have one submod.

But, it's the best we have, until someone decides to implement file signing. But that would probably be an overkill.

So the point is, checksum warning basically means "warranty is void" even though we don't actually give a warranty.

Waaaiit - so I don't get my money back on CK2Plus when I'm not satisfied?!
Now that's an outrage! You treat your customers worse than Paradox does with all its DLCs!
Rest assured you will be sued and I WILL get my money back - oh wait I didn't pay anything nevermind...

Sir, I assure you that if you are not satisfied that you will receive a full refund for the return of the mod in the amount of $0.00 to the form of payment used.

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I wanted to avoid duplication & bump this back into a position where a new player of CK2+ might see it. It's useful to be kept up to date on this issue, I think.

Anyway, my question is this: Does CK2+ ALWAYS tell you on startup that it has an invalid checksum? I am playing the with older build for vanilla version 2.7.2 and after getting the checksum warning the first time I deleted everything and reinstalled, and then got the warning again. I don't have any submods enabled, and I disabled the India submod that comes with the installer.

Only if the checksum actually is invalid.
In other words, if you get the warning on startup, you have a) messed up the installation or b) used a submod (or another mod) that does alter your checksum.
So in your case, if I understand you correctly and you have used the appropriate mod version for 2.7.2, then the warning should not have shown. Though what the reason for that might be I don't know.

are you using CK2 2.7.2?
yes

I again uninstalled the game and deleted all remaining local files, including the HIP mod in the \mod folder in the game directory. Then I reinstalled the game and the mod and once again got an invalid checksum.

This is all quite puzzling.

Yes, it is an older computer -- in fact, I have a new one on order. Should get it in a few days.
But if that's the only problem, then the checksum shouldn't really make a difference & I can ignore it.

Ok, I'm back.
The new computer arrived, I installed everything afresh on it, and presto - an invalid checksum!
How is that possible? This is still 4.06.8, by the way. And before you ask, yes, I am running the 2.7.2 vanilla version.
One is tempted to make a deep dive into how checksums work, but on second thought it hardly seems worth the trouble!

Hm, I'm not getting correct checksum either. I know it used to be correct.
Maybe something changed in the checksum calculation...
