I'm almost ashamed to say it, but for some reason I find Iron Weasel (NATO scn4 I think) an absolute b*tch. I just can't keep up with the swarms of foecraft, and the hidden Russian carrier group always manages to take out my southern SAG before anything can be done.

Anyone have any strategy for this kind of beating?

What I do is concentrating all fighters to defend airbases and the surface group, and be slightly defensive. Make sure you have good active radar vision of the southern area so your Standard missiles can have full effect against all missiles and aircraft. Trying to lure enemy fighters into your SAMs is nice when it works. Keep tanker planes protected by the SAMs as long as long can. Expect your air force to take a beating and probably lose the little SAG, hopefully after it has taken out a lot of missiles intended for your airfields.

The short leg of the Gripen also does not help. If you setup you CAP position wrong. You pretty much don't have a chance adjust without getting hit with the dreaded RTB bug ;-P. Make sure you have a tanker up. It's almost a cheat when you can refuel from tanker in 30 seconds but it will take you 30 min if you land ;-P

The tanker seems to get clusterf***ed by thirsty Gripens sometime after gamestart, meaning I have a large gap in my picket where they *all* used to be :p Might try sending out my jets at 5/10~min intervals to prevent that.

Here is how i did it.

I managed to win this scenario last night on the 5th or 6th attempt. (Normal Difficulty - I hate turning difficulty down, I feel like I am cheating :p )

For the first few attempts I focused solely on defensive strategies, until I realised this was what I was doing wrong. It doesn't matter how defensive you are... you will eventually be overwhelmed.

So, I changed tactics somewhat. here is how I did it.

Immediately EMPTY your western most base of aircraft...

Send the interceptors to create a wall of CAP on the threat axis east of your north-east base. Be sure to clear them to fire on all targets and extend this wall far enough into the sea to cover your south task force on its approach past the island. (the AI likes to lob some missiles at it if it detects them early)

Send the strike craft east ahead of your southern task force, near the island in the middle)

Send the tankers high, and with radar on, spread out a way behind your CAP zone.

Send the chopper to sonabouy the area in front of your task force. (never yet seen a sub on this mission, but you never know)

IMPORTANT, Manually re-assign the home base for ALL aircraft, to your north east base. you can now safely ignore your western base. You will probably loose the tankers, but the early intel they provide is worth it to help intercept the first waves of missiles and aircraft. And since all your planes are now based at the north east base, they don't have far to go to rearm / refuel

Send all strike craft from north east base, to meet the strike craft on route from west base. your goal here is to create a massed strike force to engage and destroy the first enemy ship that you will shortly discover east of your southern task force.

Around the same time your strike package is assembled, the first enemy waves of bombers with escort will start to appear, be ready to rotate your cap screen back to base, whilst launching replacements from the north east base. You have to keep a CONSTANT screen of defensive interceptors in the air in order to keep the enemy away from your base and task force. Even just forceing them to evade and fall back is good enough.

Once your overwhelming strike package has vaporised the first enemy ships, send them back to rearm.

Now, once again, MASS your strike package just east of the base over the island, and then send it north east to look for the enemy carrier group. If you have a tanker still available, send it over too to help scout for the carrier group. When located, launch all available ordinance (including your task force anti ship weapons tomahawks) at it.
You may have to return and rearm your strike package and do it once more.

The reason this works so well, is because the strike planes carry ammrams, and thus can actually fend of air defences themselves for a while, as well as contributing to the number of missiles available to intercpt bombers / enemy missiles.

Job done.

Question: Have just completed this (albeit on easy), and am wondering about helicopters. Do they count towards the in-mission aircraft destroyed score? They didn't seem to as far as i could tell, but then it looked like they did count towards the aircraft destroyed in the post-mission scoreboard.

Also noticed that the mission log/objectives doesn't like it when an objective changes from single to multiple lines mid mission (it fit properly at 0/20 but didn't as soon as the score reached double figures):

I beat this one on 'hard', and I actually think that might be the easiest way to win it.

Basically, because your victory conditions are so simple - destroy 20 aircraft. With the 'hard' difficulty, the enemy has a LOT more aircraft in the air. I found I was able to destroy 20 of them within a few minutes of playing - they are all looking for my ships, or trying to fire off missiles at my airbases.

Kind of like the previous poster noted - the trick, here, is to be CRAZY offensive. What I did was actually push my entire set of aircraft as close to the enemy fleet (in the NE) as the range would allow. The enemy southern ship I didn't have to do anything with via my aircraft - ship-to-ship missiles destroyed it easily. And since your objectives are not related to the sinking of enemy ships...just ignore them! Any fighters tasked with naval strike or strike packages should instead be re-tasked for pure air-to-air.

I guess it's kind of "gamey", because in reality ignoring the massive Russian BCGN would result in the airbases being destroyed very shortly after you "win", but as it is...just destroy 20 aircraft (which is easiest to do on 'hard'), and you win! So focus EVERYTHING on anti-air...

Part of the reason this is also easiest is that - especially if you push early towards the enemy - you can catch them all as a blob...just after takeoff. Fire all your AMRAAMS at them. Just...all of them. Keep forcing your aircraft to fire until every rack is empty and the sky is full of AMRAAMS (and don't let them RTB until their racks are empty, either - half of them run out of fuel and crash into the ocean? Doesn't matter - as long as you get 20 air-to-air kills, you win.)

Overkill? Nope - the missiles can re-target after their initial target is destroyed, so throwing a sky full of AMRAAMS in the general direction of the blob of enemy aircraft just-after-taking-off is...a good way to win.
